DILEMMA: FX 5900 non ultra or radeon 9800 pro

which card should i go for; most of the reviews are done a while back and they say that one is as good as another however nvidia are supposed to regain all the crummy shader performances with the new forcewares; is this true? oh yeh the radeon is £34 more and is a sapphire whereas the fx5900 is asus.

If u want a good solid card with great drivers, go for NVidia Cards (5900(XT))
If u want the best Gaming Card with the best Image Quality, go for ATI (9800 pro)

By the way do you (goliath) really need a new card right now? I am asking question like this because me myself also wants the upgrade but the new cards are comming out very soon. I mean i'll wait untill the new cards have introduce themself.

OP
its 5900 non ultra and radeon 9800 pro.

the only reason i am considering this is coz the new top end cards are going 2 be £300; the radeon 9800 pro is 160ish inclusive of vat and the 5900 non ultra i can get for £133.

i am a doom 3 person; not a fan of hl2, so which card would suit my purposes?

thanks for any help

If you are doom III person then get the Geforce FX 5900, because ID soft have partner ship with nVidia, but no one can tell it perform batter on nVidia card. If you can't wait until the end of this month (Date for new card comming out) then you may get the Geforce FX 5900 Ultra, cause this baby can easily mod to 5950 Ultra. You can get the 5900 non-ultra too but it is harder to mod to 5950 ultra.

My recommendation is that either you wait or get the Radeon 9800 pro.

OP
does anyone know the specs of the new midrange cards?

the thing is the radeon 9800 pros price is gone down for a reason; its gna b killed off soon- i just want to know if its better me running and getting one now; or wait 3 months (ill have 2 buy a fx 5200 for £40 as my gf4mx is too crap for anything; at least the 5200 should handle dx8 shaders)

also over the last few gens the new mid range cards cant compete with the previous top of the end cards so is the radein 9800 pro worth it now?

advice as to what i should do is appreciated

The 9700 Pro can be had for just £40 more if you know what you're going - that has to be the best you can do.

PCIE cards will come out soon - but will programs need it the second the cards come out? I'll leave you to answer that.

the cheapest radeon 9800 is £140 that i can find. thats right on the price of a 5900xt, but after reading a few reviews the xt seems much faster with opengl and slighly slower with directx. is this better than a 9800pro? im skeptical as the 9800pro was the crown of ATI only 6 months ago

Yes, and the 5900XT never was the crown of anything - surely that will mean something? :)

but the 5900 XT is a good Price/Performance Card, i think
i saw some good benchmarks of this Card and the price is not sooooo high like a 5900(ultra)

so, u can see some benchmarks of this card here (german)
but the pics say more than words :-)

OP
brought the HIS radeon 9800pro. the card is not fully in my case for some reason

i do 3dmark with the drivers off the cd; major display corruption. this is my 2nd radeon that hasnt worked on my current system. oddly, all the nvidia cards worked perfectly. i now have 2 return this joke of a card and will buy a nice winfast a350 (f5900). i dont know what u ati boyz think but i would certainly sacrifice a few frames for some stability!

EDIT: sorry bout taking the piss of ati i was fuming at the time. ive put off buying a proper gfx card till the games come out because by then carmack &co are gna be telling us we need the 6800 ultra to really show off his game. i brought a 9200 to replace my mx440. ive now sold my 5900xt and hae enough for an upgrade when its neede. the 9200, no matter what people say is damn good; i can run serious sam 2 at 2xAA and 8xAF with perfectly decent frames and in halo everything looks just as good as a DX9 card; except i cant do glare on bump objects :-? .

By the way; are there any games that are actually making extensive use of shaders yet??

OP
actually the money for my 5900xt just came in 2day...

now with the money i can do:

1- get the gainward goldensample 5900xt clocked at 400/780 (in between an xt and a vanilla 5900)

2- hold on till the new chips enter the market. i cant remember where but i saw the mid range ati offering as an 8 pipeline piece clocked at 400/850, but it seems to be crippled as it said it has 128bit memory

Considering the 6800 have double the speed of both, I think you should wait a month. Having a gfx card that runs half the speed of the 'latest card' just one month after buying a new and expensive graphiccard isnt fun.

the 6800 is as expensive as many pcs!

i brought the gainward goldensample 5900xt; the clocks on the card makes it fast- 5200 3dmark 03 vs my old leadtek which got 4650!!

after my exams are over im gna sell this and get a 9800 pro for £125ish; no need for a new card as theres nothing that the 9800pro cant do

will the price drop even further on the 9800 pro or is this it b4 ati run out of chips??

Hi there

Im in the same boat atm.. just lost my Ti4200 P Turbo, good card so I dedcided to take the 9800Pro over the Nvidia Cards.

There is a Hercules card going for under £120 @ overclockers.co.uk, but im getting my Sapphire for 124 from a mate in the business so im happy.

Just hope i dont have any gfx problems with it, after being a nvidia man for years, with stability etc i dont wanna be changing drivers each time i want to play a different game

I Just cant warrent paying over 160 quid for a gfx card, if it plays the games at respectable fps then its fine by me
