KDE Plasma 6.8.1 Releases During KDE's 30th Anniversary Week

Published by

KDE has released Plasma 6.8.1, marking its first Wayland-exclusive point release during the celebration of its 30th anniversary. This bugfix-only update addresses issues across about 40 projects, with significant improvements in KWin, remote desktop functionality, and power management, resulting in enhanced user experiences such as stable Windows RDP connections and reduced cursor flicker. The release follows Plasma 6.8.0, which transitioned to being entirely Wayland-based, eliminating support for X11 sessions, while maintaining compatibility with legacy X11 applications through XWayland. The rapid release cycle continues with 6.8.2 scheduled for October 27, 2023, and the 6.x series expected to extend until the 6.9 feature release in February 2027

KDE shipped Plasma 6.8.1, its first Wayland-exclusive point release. The bugfix-only update packs fixes across roughly 40 projects, with the heaviest work landing in KWin, remote desktop, and power management. Most users will feel the change in daily tasks: Windows RDP connections connect cleanly, cursor flicker disappears, and multi-GPU setups stop crashing. It sits between the 6.8.0 milestone and the 6.9 feature release due late February 2027.
