AM 10.7 AppImage Package Manager Surpasses 9,000 Apps Amid Developer Rift with Upstream

The release of AM version 10.7 has significantly increased its AppImage package catalog to 9,233 unique applications, primarily due to an enhanced automation feature that generates install scripts rapidly. However, the release has been overshadowed by a public dispute between AM's creator, Ivan Alessandro Sala, and upstream AppImage maintainers regarding stricter validation rules in appimagetool, which led Sala to fork the tool and adopt a different implementation. This rift highlights a broader cultural divide within the Linux packaging community, with Sala prioritizing ease of use and adoption, while maintainers emphasize quality and format standards. The ongoing tensions reflect larger shifts in the ecosystem, as the number of AppImages grows, driving the need for efficient tools that balance quality control with accessibility for developers

AM version 10.7 has pushed its AppImage package catalog to 9,233 unique applications, more than doubling since the September 10.5 build. That surge comes largely from an improved -t template option that automates the creation of install scripts for GitHub-hosted AppImages, reportedly generating 15 scripts per minute. The real drama, though, is a public falling-out between Sala and the upstream AppImage maintainers over stricter validation in appimagetool, which now turns warnings like broken icons into hard build failures. Rather than reconcile, Sala forked both appimagetool and type2-runtime and shifted to Pkgforge's implementation, a split many are reading as an early fault line in the fight over Linux desktop packaging.
