Red Hat and researchers in name tiff over "Fedora"

Published by [NT] 0

Before Red Hat used the name "Fedora" for their new consumer Linux dist, the name was used by computer scientists at Cornell University who was working on a project named fedora "flexible extensible digital object repository architecture."
Red Hat has now filed trademarks on name and treating it as such on their site, ignoring protests from the scientists at Cornell University. The scientists hadn?t trademarked the name because they are a research project rather than a commercial project and never had interests in grabbing the name.
But now the researchers are facing many support requests from Linux people and they are considering what to do to oppose Red Hat.

White Box Enterprise Linux RC1 FTP Download

Published by [NT] 0

The first release candidate of White Box Enterprise Linux is now available as FTP download. This Linux based on the Red Hat Enterprise Linux 3.0 sources

"What is the goal for White Box Linux?

To provide an unencumbered RPM based Linux distribution that retains enough compatibility with Red Hat Linux to allow easy upgrades and to retain compatibility with their Errata srpms. Being based off of RHEL3 means that a machine should be able to avoid the upgrade treadmill until Oct 2008 since RHEL promises Errata availability for five years from date of initial release and RHEL3 shipped in Oct 2003.

Or more briefly, to fill the gap between Fedora and RHEL."
