Mr. Thomsen and myself, Mr. Mertin, the owners of this website, have observed the latest political and military developments since Wednesday with the most sincere concern. In our opinion it is a tragedy that it has come so far and that all peaceful efforts were thrown aside as the U.S. have begun their attacks. No question that a dictatorship may not be the best political system to have in a country but is that really our's to decide on? And are there not other countries in the far east that should be observed with similar concern?

The United Nations Security Council has been rendered ineffective by the decision George W. Bush has made. We admit though that politics would have taken a much longer time frame. Our thoughts are with the victims of this war - Soldiers and civilians on both sides of the frontiers.

Worldwide acclaimed brazilian author Paul Coelho, author of “The Alchemistâ€, amongst other works, and member of the Brazilian Academy of Arts & Letters, wrote the following critical open letter to the President of the United States...

Thank you, George Bush, the Great Leader.

First of all, may I thank you for showing all of us the danger which Saddam Hussein represents. Perhaps many of us might have forgotten that he used chemical weapons against his own people as well as against the people of Iran. Hussein is a blood-thirsty dictator, and certainly an embodiment of evil in the world today.

However, that is not the only reason why I am thanking you. In the early months of 2003, you helped show us, sir, many important things about the world, and it is for this that you have my gratitude. I was taught as child to always say "thank you" to someone who has done me a favor, and it is in that spirit that I write these words.

Thank you for showing us all that the people of Turkey and their Parliament are not for sale, not even for $26 billion dollars.

Thank you for showing us clearly the enormous abyss which exists between the decisions taken by leaders of nations and the true desires of their people. Thank you for helping us see with painful clarity that whether it is José Aznar of Spain or Tony Blair of the UK, that our so called elected leaders don´t have the slightest regard or respect for the fact that over 90% of their population are against war. Thank you for allowing us to witness the ease with whichTony Blair was able to blithely ignore the largest public protest held in England in the last 30 years.

Thank you, because your insistence on war forced Blair to go to Parliament with a plagiarized dossier which consisted of notes written ten years ago by an arab graduate student. As a result we were able to witness the unbelievable farce of Blair insisting that these notes represented “proof†gathered by the British secret service.

Thank you for for making Colin Powell descend to the ridiculous by showing the UN Security Council photographs, which a week later were publicly denounced by Hans Blix, the weapons inspector responsible for verifying the disarmament of Iraq

Thank you, because your position on war resulted in the French Foreign Minister, Mr. Dominique de Villepin, in his speech against war on Iraq, being honored by a standing ovation. This is an honor which, if I am correct, has only happened once before in the history of the U.N., and that was during a presentation by Nelson Mandela.

Thank you, because due to your strenuous push for war, for the first time the Arab nations of the Gulf, usually so divided, have found a reason to unite and have recently issued a joint resolution in Cairo condemning your proposed invasion. You have brought about a unity of opinion amongst the arab nations, that they had not achieved on their own.

Thank you, because as a result of your administration´s rhetoric blasting the United Nations as “irrelevantâ€, even the most undecided and reluctant nations have been inspired to take a position against your country´s attack on Iraq.

Thank you for your extraordinary foreign policy. Attempts to defend your ambitions have caused British Foreign Minister Jack Straw, to attempt to argue a case for a “moral warâ€, and with each attempt lose more international credibility.

Thank you for attempting to divide Europe, which after a century of war and upheaval has been fighting for unity. This was a warning clearly seen by all of us, and it will not be forgotten.

Thank you for finally managing to achieve what few have managed in the past century: to unite millions of people, across the continents and give them a common cause to fight for, even if that cause is the exact opposite from yours.

Thank you for letting us feel that even if our words are not being heard, they are at least being repeated. This will give us strength in the future.

Thank you, because without your esteemed help, we wouldn´t have known the extent to which we were capable of mobilizing. Perhaps this appears useless today...but it will serve us in the future.

Thank you.

So, now that the drums of war seem to beat with unstoppable ferocity, I want to add an insight, words uttered by an ancient European King to a would-be invader:

“May your morning be glorious and May the sun shine brightly on the armor of your soldiers, because in the afternoon I will defeat you.â€

Mr. Bush, thank you as well for visibly trying to stop a movement which has already begun. We will pay attention to the feelings of impotence, and the sensations it arouses within us. We will learn to deal with those emotions, and we will transform them.

In the meantime, may you enjoy your beautiful morning, and all the glory that it may bring you.

Thank you, because I know you will not listen to us, nor take us seriously. Know, however, that we have listened to you and heard you clearly, and we will not soon forget your words.

Thank you, George W. Bush, the great leader!

Many thanks to you.

Mr. Coelho certainly has his points. We would like to point out that this is our personal opinion about this war. Feel free to leave a comment if you wish.

The fact that you get your info from those conspiracy/anti-US web pages make you less creditable. And dont even get me started on those tank shells we have which their tips are made of Depleted Uranium. The articles blaming the Gulf War syndrome on us are utterly brainwashing materials, im supprised you didnt know the dangerous of reading internet doccuments.

Yes, I registered for kicks, I run a website that does files that most of you have probably been to if you have been here. We opted NOT to place any war crap on there because it is overcovered everywhere. We opted to stick to business. Only thing worse is seeing the war discussed on a gaming site

As an update and for those disliking the protestors. I agree, I just saw Chicago and it was peaceful and I respect that. I dont respect people blocking traffic and using our tax money to have them arrested as well as our needed police force. It accomplishes nothing. As I said, there a word for those of us who dont go to protests, for or against: EMPLOYED. Anyway, CNN just showed the US and Brits in the first city. The Iraqis were helping tear down Sadaams pictures, LITERALLY dancing in the streets and hugging, kissing and just wanting to touch and thank the soldiers. That, following a few small protests on TV almost brought tears to my eyes, but instead I was so happy for those people that I was laughing and smiling with my son. What a great day.

What do you have to say to that? Hopefully that your sorry you got wrapped up into BS, because for all the anti war crap, there it is on live TV and its beautiful.

Good luck to our troops and the Iraqi people.

As an aside, I'm noticing the small post count of many posters in this thread. It looks like many of us (including myself) registered specifically to post in this topic (though I personally intend to be an active poster on the forums after this thread). This issue sure is a passionate one.

1991 - Saddam Hussein capitulates to the UN (pay attention here children... the UN OK'd the war in '91) and signed a CEASE FIRE TREATY. For all of you French and German appeasers that is like when the little cheese-eating, wine-drinking, non-bathing people layed down their guns for that NAZI monster home grown by the now "passive" (cause WE beat the shit out of them in WWII BTW) German land of luxury cars and LAN parties. Now modern day... 17 BROKEN UN RESOLUTIONS LATER Saddam Hussein has RESISTED ALL PEACEFUL means of disarming; he has REPEATEDLY shot at our surveillance planes in the designated NO FLY ZONE in nothern IRAQ in defiance of the UN restrictions. What do we call shooting at someone during peacetime/ceasefire? AN ACT OF WAR and a resumption of prior AGRESSIONS. And if you want to debate the EXISTENCE of WMD's by Iraq go into your little hut and have your tribesman crank up your electric generator donated by our RED CROSS and open a can of that yummy HUMANITARIAN AID PACKAGE from the US and turn on CNN on your JAPANESE TV (who also support the war BTW) and look at the scud missiles coming from Iraq at US troops, Israel and Kuwait... DIDN'T IRAQ CLAIM IN THEIR O' SO COMPLETE 12,000 PAGE DOCU-DUMP TO HAVE DISARMED AND NOT HAVE SCUDS. Aren't SCUDS dissallowed by the UN resolutions? Isn't Hans Blix NOW saying IRAQ is in CLEAR MATERIAL BREACH OF ALL UN RESOLUTIONS INCLUDING THE RECENT 1441? My country men, soldiers, in MY country are dying in firefights WE DON'T have to have to free the IRAQI people and MY tax dollars are paying for it. We could just drop a f'n nuke on the whole country and not lose a single American, but no... we are trying to do MINIMAL damage to the Iraqi people and JUST hit hard targets and fair military targets (Saddam is the HEAD of the military BTW children) while Saddam is trying to cause ecological damage by planning to dump oil into the sea and lighting his countries oil supply on fire... WHICH HE ALSO CLAIMED HE WOULDN'T DO! Also to the oh so eloquent and politically uninformed staff of Warp2search (brilliant tech guys BTW), the Iraqi people have NEVER been given a chance to CHOOSE their form of government. Go watch an A&E biography on Saddam Hussein sometime; 2 weeks in office he holds a session of parlament and has a speaker read a list of names that oppose him as leader (a military coupe BTW after the prior president mysteriously resigns out of the blue) while in the audience, among the members of parliament, Saddams troops escort the opposers outside forcefully and promptly executes them? Should Tony Blair EXECUTE the Tories? Did George Bush EXECUTE Al Gore? You have no concept of world governments my friends... we are GIVING them a chance at democracy which they have NEVER had. If you TRULY think America is so bad, have the gonads to take a stand. Boycott ALL US goods. Stop buying our software and games and movies and burgers and clothes and cars and PC's and Shoes and Electronics ... etc. Otherwise, sit down... shut the F UP, have a Big Mac and a Coke and support the liberation of Iraq. Thank you for your time in reading this Gentlemen.

I have great respect for this site. It is probably my favorite Tech site. I come here for Tech News... Not politics. I am a proud member of the Military and am offended by the Notice on the front page. I don't mind this thread since everyone is entitled to their own views, however I don't think it belongs on your front page.

Great site, but you guys just lost alot of respect from me. Sorry. Peace is great, but not realistic. If he was left alone eventually something would happen directly from him or he could end up supplying Al Queda or another group with things that they would use against the US or many other Nations. Action was needed.

Please remove the front page notice...
Respectfully,

Me

First of all i am not Anti American, every person has the freedom to choose whatever he wants as long as he doesn't insult the rights of another person. Here the whole situation is quite complicated , more complicated then u think, because first of all Saddam is basicaly a dictator in his country and he is insulting the rights of his citizens. USA now they are entering the IRAQ air space, they are bombing Iraqie buildings with the danger of killing innocent people.USA ignored a major UN member the French and decided to go without vote. to fulfil their plans, because in my opinion they had already deployed thousands of troops there, and they didn't want all this to go like that.
Iraqie citizens right now they are losing quite a lot of money from this war , a lot of them will go to poverty, a lot of them might die, or go insane, War is not a child's play and noone should embrace it, because it brings more bad things then good. We are talking about people not machines, i am sure that from both sides (America's and Iraq's), will be a lot of people coming out with depresion symptoms and other phycological diseases. And dont speak of war if you have not been in one, and if you have not experienced one.
And lastly do you know that USA gave half of Cyprus to the Turks? If you didn't know it please read the real facts.

All these are facts and u can not deny them because they are, and i did my lessons. And did you know where Iraq, Albania, or Bosnia were before USA started the war in those places? This might be also an effort from the American goverment to make the Americans learn about the world better .

I am against the goverment of America (and specifically at their decision to go to war) not the American people, dont confuse those two things.( The goverment of America does not represent the whole population of America as there is no much partisipation in voting, and this is ignorance from my point of view.)

If America wants Saddam Hussein out of their way, why then their so called intelligence CIA , can not sent agents find him and kill him(this seems like a James Bond plot )? And someone will tell me, it does not work like that , ofcourse i know that , war is not a movie and is not like any movie, is a documentary about depressed and dead people...

I thought that Al Queda had their origins in Aghanistan and not Iraq as someone has stated, commenting one of my statements, nevermind.

And please do not choose phrases from my writings, if you want to choose something choose the whole paragraph and comment that. Because by doing that people will believe other then the ones that i intented to.

Iraqi people already have been suffering under Saddam's regime. And remember, this is a war against his government, not the Iraqi people.

And dont speak of war if you have not been in one, and if you have not experienced one.

Never been in one, but I know what it is to be harassed by your own government.

And lastly do you know that USA gave half of Cyprus to the Turks? If you didn't know it please read the real facts.

I dont know, I dont have time to look through it. But what does this have anything to do with the war on Iraq?

All these are facts and u can not deny them because they are, and i did my lessons. And did you know where Iraq, Albania, or Bosnia were before USA started the war in those places? This might be also an effort from the American goverment to make the Americans learn about the world better .

Anti-US Sentiment, please stay on topic

Perhaps you should work more on your grammar and spelling first before criticizing somebody.

Talking about ignorance, theres a law that makes it illegal for foreign leader assassination. However, it IS legal taking out a war commander. Do you have any idea how tight the security in Bagdad is? Ill let you in a little. At one point, Saddam have people pretending to be overthrowing him to confront his bodyguards. Of course, some of these guys agreed to be on the (pretending) conspirator's side and they were executed right away.

You might disagree with me and say Im brainwashed by mainstream media. But what about your anti-US media? No matter how hard you are trying to educate us on how the US government might have other reasons to wage war on Iraq. The fact remain solid, Saddam is a ruthless leader and MUST be removed from power.

"Perhaps you should work more on your grammar and spelling first before criticizing somebody."

Is that a serious answer? Tell me... My main language is not English, and i speak more the 2 languages, are you? This is ridiculous.

DoverBen182 WROTE:
"Iraqi people already have been suffering under Saddam's regime. And remember, this is a war against his government, not the Iraqi people."

There are a lot of people that are suffering from their goverment, are we gonna attack them all, again that's ridiculous.

It seems that the whole thing was quite trivial for you, you can solve a whole problem over a few phrases, no sir, first learn to tackle the problem and then solve it.

English is my 3rd language, but I dont feel morally superior than anybody and call that person ignorant. YOu did just that by implying the American people were ignorant.

My argument were broken into phrases so they could be easier to read. Again, please stay on topic.

You were using the arguement about how Iraqi people are losing money. I just used that to prove you wrong

Like the other poster stated, most of the anti-war folk's opinions are expressed through emotion, not facts. Sure, there are other murderous regimes, going after one of them doesnt make our action wrong. Not to mention the risk of starting another WW if we go to war with China or Russia. So diplomacy is all we can do right now

Ok I am so tired of people quoting the 10 commandments saying that it says Though shalt not kill. Go do a little research, in the Hebrew it says not to murder. there is a big difference.

I hate war, my son was in Desert Storm, He is there now. I have no idea where or what he is doing, He is special forces. But how can the world say we are so wrong and evil for this. When they can't see all that Sadam and his evil son's have done to his own people.

There nations owe rather substantial sums of money to Iraq, Russia, Germany, and France. Three nations blocked what was being done in the UN. Lets guess what three that was. France said they would veto anything that called for military action. But it was only the massive build up of military strength that was getting anything done. A deadline was needed, followed by action. Only a fool would believe that Sadam would have ever gotten rid of his weapons. or revealed what he truly had.

To be honest, I don't care if they ever find weapons of mass distruction. I don't care if all the Arab wold hates us. They will do that anyway. But if getting rid of Sadam, means women and children wont be tortured to get there husbands to do whats wanted, if entire villages are never gassed again, well then the French can take the Statue of liberty and stick it.

May God or Ala rebuke all of you blind self centered people.

I used to come to this site for tech news, but seeing as how you want to babble your worthless, irrelevant opinions in an attempt at making a personal statement, that is fine; however personal statements carry a price and I for one will not ever come to your site again and i call on everyone else to follow suite - to teach the little Brazilians a lesson. As Americans we are not really interested in opinions of anyone in a third rate fourth world country. In an age of spineless leaders and has been world powers, the United States is the only country, the only super power that can...and will stand up on principles and morals. We saw all too clear that the United Nations chose irrelevancy by wanting money and favors from the United States in exchange for votes. No other country knows anyhting of principle and our friends, who support us will benefit from our generosity and those who oppose us....well, I am sure that in a few months we will see the economic collapse of France and I will for one welcome it. Who do they think they are? To oppose us and try to get us to Submit under the thumb of the United States, in an attempt to hog-tie the most powerful empire in the history of the world. We were cowardly attacked and the world is learning that we will not tolerate it. We have our covert forces in any and almost all countries that harbor terrorists and there is no trial, we are systematically destroying themWe are not a two bit people that will cowerin the face of terrorism. We all support President Bush for his leadership and I am now a HUGE fan of Prime Minister Blair. Who knew he had it in him. The United States will preemptively attack and launch our urban renewal programs in any country we deem a threat to our security. Can anyone say North Korea, I am sure we are teeing them up next. The only thing that has made the UN relevant was the participation, money and clout that the United States gave it, oh and the fact that it is headquartered in New York. I would like to see what would happen if they were headquartered in any other country. We will win, we will be victorious and the entire world will learn once and for all that the United States, not its people, will allow other countries to dicate or grant us permission to protect ourselves. The President of the United States, God Bless him, will not make his decisions by consensus of weak, irrelevant and cowardly countries and their two-bit mob-boss leaders. Protest all you want, say all you want, but I have to tell you, big mistake posting your comments and my advice is to remove yours before too many people read mine.

DoverBen182 I dont want to discuss this further . I have lots of examples that might prove you wrong. But this is the wrong time and the wrong place to discuss them. My words are not attacking anyone and are not threatening anyone i am not in position to do that, this is just my concern about whats happenning around me and around us, because if something goes wrong and if one of those countries decide to take revenge and if they by any luck have access to one of those million warheads then we are doomed. Americans are creating enemies not friends. For example if you destroy my house do you think that i will be grateful for what you did to me ... i dont think so.
And i am concerned about the lives of the people all around the world, because every human is a person, and he/she has the right to live. It is immoral to kill innocent people , and then say that it was a mistake, or say that in a war these things can happen, they can of course but then why? We are creating something for some reason, and humans are creatures that like to expand and take power , and we can be easily addicted by that, and throw stones to those that tell us that we are wrong. Because we are already deep in the crystal ball of selfishness. Be selfish is not a crime, but all the extremes are dangerous and can harm those that touch them. This is the case for all the people, and it was the same with all the empires, that we came through.

Americans have never been well liked in the few hundred years we've been on this planet. We're the bastard children of the world, a country formed and built by a bunch of persecuted, poor, rejected, immigrants and we're probably the strongest country in the world today. We've aided several countries in their moments of need, but no one returns our phone calls when their not in need. We're allies when you need us and not even acquaintances when we ask for a favor. Too good for us, but our money is always welcome. Most Americans feel betrayed by most countries especially those we've certainly helped more than few times along the way.
We have pretty much ignored terrorism for the last 10 years, we've rolled over and let things go by we appeared soft, big open targets who won't retaliate. Meanwhile Iraq keeps ignoring inspections, laws and edicts, and we sit there asking with empty threats. Then there was 9/11. After an event like that you start assessing things a little differently. We striked out immediately against Afghanistan and sent the Taliban into hiding. Meanwhile Iraq has been ignoring sanctions and edicts and laws ever since we left that country. So what do we do, we make good on our threats we've been making for a decade, we're tying up loose ends. This is a nice giant display of what the small percentage of our military can do. This is an example, an example to the world that terrorism against the US is a highly dangerous business, that we will back up our words, and that we are very serious. This is the way we fight terrorism, with a nice reminder that if you really want to, you could be next.
We would have liked to have full support in our actions, we tried the diplomatic approach and the talk ran out, we all know this was not a matter that would be solved by diplomacy (we already tried that for over a decade ). We would have liked for the countries we've defended to at least defend our actions, but is still unnecessary. We understand why you do not support this war. 9/11 was the single most traumatic event in the last century of American history and it changed us as a country. We will make every last effort to make it clear to the world that it will never happen again. We set an example today that while may cost lives will hopefully save many more to show that are now penalties and consequences for their actions and that we will not be ignored.

Dear Mr. Thomsen and Mr. Mertin,

You have a great website which I visit each and everyday.

Let me tell you that I am an Arab from Lebanon in the middle east area, know that when you have a country with a dictator leadership people have no power for change, I have seen neighboring countries like Syria destroy hole villages of its own people with airplanes bombardment and tank artillery in order to contain a revolution, I have seen Saudi Arabia Friday decapitation place where people loose a hand, an ear, a finger with a strike of a sword for committing various crimes ( like stealing, or cheating with someone's wife ) and even loose a head for serious crimes, many crimes and injustice acts have been committed in my country too which is basically a democratic republic ( governed by a dictator country which is Syria ), let us not forget what is happening between Palestinians and Israel each and every day.

We, Arabs are a very nice people, most of us are good to be with and very generous but sadly extremism is taking over and that's what we don't like to see.

I mostly blame France and Germany for the high division in the security council, Saddam's regime would have gone forever using the hide and seek technique and mostly they would have found nothing except bits and pieces and they knew it since the beginning.

I can only wonder how would President Jack Chirac would react if he had a plane full of people go into the Eiffel tower or into one busy skyscraper and believe me people France and Germany are going to face serious problems in the future due to the high community of Algerian people and Turks in their country, what is happening now in there is just the tip of the iceberg.

God help the Iraqi people and the allied soldiers on the combat field.

Mr. Thomsen and Mr. Mertin, first off... I respect your views on the Iraq situation. It's nice one has the freedom to express their feelings and not worry about "Religious/Political" police trying to stop you or being scared that you or your family won't be safe if a comment of opposition is stated.

I, and I am using this in the singular term... I am not grouping my feelings as "American feelings" together because they are different at times... in the great country of America... we do have a choice and we do have a voice.

But, I see the war as a much needed first step to rid the bullies of the World. Ones that see others opinions if not in line with theirs as enemies which are dealt with harshly... sometimes through torture and ultimately death.

You ask what a "bully" is???
A person who is habitually cruel or overbearing, especially to smaller or weaker people.
A hired ruffian; a thug.
A pimp.
v. bul·lied, bul·ly·ing, bul·lies
v. tr.
To treat in an overbearing or intimidating manner. See Synonyms at intimidate.
To make (one's way) aggressively.
v. intr.
To behave like a bully.
To force one's way aggressively or by intimidation: “They bully into line at the gas pump†(Martin Gottfried).

Well, this is what Sadaam is to a "T." He is one that is aggressive. He has killed thousands of his own people by gassing them. He has told his military to shoot defectors. He has told his military to kill the families of the defectors loved ones. He has persued chemical and biological weapons... even tried to become a nuclear state... and not to use nuclear as a means for power and energy but for death and destruction.

Why do you think he is doing this? Because he wants to kiss his countryman? Do you think he is "trying" to be a "good boy?" Do you think he is becoming a better person? No... the UN can't even sway him. Believe me, the UN has tried time and time again. They have allowed violations time and time again. The UN always comes back to the table stating... "Now, Saddam, you need to start playing nice... or...." We have allowed this for 12yrs. Do you understand? Has he changed? No... Has he destroyed the chemical and biological weapons? Well... he "says" he has but he can't show a shread of evidence showing that he's done this. Has he stopped making weapons of mass destruction? Hmmm, I don't know what you'd call persuing nuclear capabilities or"dirty bomb"making materials. But... wait... you don't want to forget that he has made drones specifically for dumping chemical and biological weapons. And, we just found out that he made one that can be controlled at an even greater distance. Hey, you know what... I think that could be used as crop dusting. I am sure that he wouldn't design it for carrying out "bad things."

Calling the U.S.A. a bunch of bullies is just plain insane or ludicrious. I would imagine the ones saying the derogatory blanket statements about the U.S. are the "political bandwagon boys"... in other words... "the fair-weather fans"...

I would hope that by researching the past and present that one would be able to tell what the future has in store. That's usually how it works...

He... the incredible "Sadamn" of a man...
the "do-gooder..." we'll just wait for him to change his ways. Let's sit here and wait another 12yrs and see if he has completed one of the UN resolutions. Why don't we sit here and wait till another thousand Iraqi citizens get gassed. Why should we meddle in other countries problems if they aren't on our homefront. Why should we even give humanitarian aid to the Iraqi people??? You know, the United States could spend their money in better ways like... well, like giving every Iraqi a tree to plant... and then once it gets bigger, to be able to hug that tree. Why don't we just buy everyone flowers. That would make everyone play nice. I know that if we all hold hands and stand in roadways... that this will be a much better society. WHATEVER... ARE YOU ANTI-WAR PROTESTERS ALL SMOKIN' THE WACKY TOBBACCEY??? Be honest now...

Listen up, I hope our boys (American, Britian, and the Aussies) come back in as few body bags as possible. I wish the soldiers that help to rid our planet of evil be blessed by the higher powers that be. I hope the Iraqi people see as little death and destruction as need be. I hope others that are pro-war in this situation don't kick back on their couches and let the anti's be heard only. Please show your support.

"We will eventually have our peace... if not, you will preemptively be judged."

BTW... Abbadon, if you could comprehend what some of the posters were saying... the Sept. 11th deal was a sad time for the US. And, a time in which we have looked back and asked ourselves how this type of thing could have been prevented. Well, we know that Saddam is an evil person and he takes lives whenever he wants. We understand that he has a large financial backing. The USA also knows that he has ties with individuals that in every form of the word "terrorists." We understand that at this time there has not been any linkage between him and bin Laden.

MysticHead... that's "neat' that you think this war is about oil. I think it's clever that you think the UN is a bunch of people looking out for the best interests of the people. Did you know that the goverments opposed to the war are the ones that have given research, chemicals, machinery, etc to Saddam to build his weapons of mass destruction? We realized both him and bin Laden were a little on the wacko side and we stopped. But, these other countries, even after the UN told the countries to stop kept right on selling their goods behind the UN's back. Now, it's unfortunate that the cat's out of the bag and these nations will be exposed for the cash they wanted to make on the sales. And, you think the war is for oil alone??? Go ask Germany and France where some of their capital has come from? Ask them if they might have made a mistake by giving the "nutty professor" the tools needed to make weapons of mass destruction.

Before you speak next time... research the WHOLE story!

Why does everyone think the bombs being dropped still on Baghdad are being dropped regardless of civilians? It's been shown throughout the raids that the targets are "government" installations, those that contain very little if any civilian life since any political leader in that area is long gone. We're even refraining from bombing one key installation because it is located amidst houses and even a hospital.

In other locations, I keep hearing people saying they had not taken a stance on whether this was right or not until they saw the bombing, then felt it was cruel and unjust...some people are too ignorant for politics.

Oh my god, I can't believe this. I had a simply HUGE response to Coelho's rubbish, and got an "invalid session" error when I submitted. Sigh, let me go back and rewrite it...

If the topic is closed when I'm finished, then I will be pissed

This is bound not to be half as good, because my heart isn't half in it now like it was, but here goes.

All peaceful efforts? The United States has tried for twelve years with the United Nations to disarm Iraq. The United Nations has proven that peaceful means are not possible.

I think that those who have lived in a dictatorship are the only ones able to truly decide and comment on how bad it is. It is not the United States decision, but the Iraqi people's decision as to what kind of government they will have after liberation.

Right...you know, I don't think Mr. Bush was around when a Russian veto prevented the United Nations from taking action in Kosovo. What was the result? I think they call it GENOCIDE. Thousands of ethnic Albanians were slaughtered, and the United States had to go in to stop it. How about when the United Nations wouldn't take action in Somalia? What was the result? Mass murder? The death of numerous United States troops? How about Rwanda. The United Nations were prohibited from protecting the people that were being SLAUGHTERED around them. Do we really have to get into the situation in Grenada?

How long? It took the United Nations twelve years to destroy missles that Iraq "didn't have." Iraq still refuses to confess to having weapons that they had in 1998, and they have provided no proof of getting rid of those weapons. Hans Blix has a list of about 15 or 20 things left that Iraq needed to declare...do we need to take 12 years for each of those items?

As are mine. My thoughts are also with these people: (Not for the weak stomached)

Paulo Coelho is a hippie. Of course he's going to oppose the war. He opposes it solely because of emotion, not because of facts. I prefer to listen to another acclaimed author, Elie Wiesel, who is a survivor of Auschwitz, and wrote the novel "Night." He also funds the Elie Wiesel Foundation for Humanity. He is a huge advocator of PEACE in the world, but he also supports George Bush and the United States because of FACTS.

From reading the rest of this, this is the closest that he gets to being correct. It's all downhill from here.

Oops, no, he's still correct.

Sorry Paulo, you're incorrect with this statement. The United States withdrew their offer to Turkey, and Turkey's parliament has voted to let the US use their air space, and to station small numbers of troops for a northern front on Iraq.

You're a humorous man, Mr. Coelho. You need a reality check if you think over 90% of Britain, Spain, or even the two combined, are against war. In the latest British polls, only about 65% are against the war (this is a number that WAS over 85% a few weeks ago). In another British poll, 51% (FIFTY-ONE PERCENT) expressed COMPLETE CONFIDENCE in George W Bush.

Sorry, Paulo, maybe you need to listen to all of what Mr. Blair said.

Interestingly enough, you do not address any of the other information that Colin Powell exhibited., nor do you address the fact that Iraq is in violation of UN Resolution 678 through 1441, and that Hans Blix recognizes this, and that he is very critical of the Iraqi government.

I'm sorry, but you're infinitely incorrect here. A short list of some people that have received standing ovations from the United Nations:

Bill Clinton
Kofi Annan
Jean Chretien
Ralph Bunche
Fidel Castro
U Thant
Tony benn

Sorry, that's just a short list, I don't have the time to list all of them.

This is interesting as well. Are you talking about Oman, the UAE, Qatar, Turkey, and Kuwait? All of these countries support the United States, Mr. Coelho. Their populations, with the exception of Turkey, also support the United States. You must be talking about Saudi Arabia...sorry Mr. Coelho, but it's 5 vs 1 here.

Really, I'm sure you must be talking about countries like Pakistan, a country that is STILL on the fence and has not gone one way or the other, or perhaps you're talking about a country like Cameroon, a former French colony, that was on the border of supporting France, but now supports the United States.

Really...shouldn't he care what the British people think? Granted the majority of the British people are against war, I've already pointed out that their opinion is quickly changing.

Divide Europe? How is the United States dividing Europe? Jacques Chirac is the one that expressed is disdain for Eastern European countries who support the United States saying that they missed "the oppurtunity to keep their mouths shut." I'm sorry sir, but if you want somebody to blame for the division of Europe, you need to look into the heart of Europe itself.

Excuse me? I don't want to say that a world renowned author is wrong...but you're wrong. World opinion is not hardly as skewed towards anti-war sentiment as you make it seem. You forget that the United States has support from EVERY CONTINENT (except Antarctica, of course) The coalition that supports this war is second in quantity only to the coalition that was against the Germans in World War II. The United States has public support in mid-Africa, northern South America, central Central America, North America, eastern Europe, and southeastern Asia.

You really should source your quotes, Mr. Coelho. Being an author, you should know this. A quick internet search produced no results aside from your letter here on numerous leftist and anti-American websites. Maybe it's the translation, I don't know.

I'm still wondering who exactly "us" is...do you live with a couple of cockroaches? Because you didn't mention them in your leftist, anti-American, anti-Bush propaganda.

I ask you, who exactly should we listen to, Mr. Coelho? France? Russia? China? Turkey (before they let us in)? Germany?

Please, remind me of what good these countries have done in the past. Russia used extreme unilateral force in Chechnya (force that was publicly condemned by the United States). Is that why we should listen to them?

Of course, China has NEVER had a bad human rights record, right? Is this why we should listen to them?

Turkey? The country that committed genocide against millions of Armenians in the early 20th century. The country that has threatened to use force (unilateral force) against the virtually defenseless Kurds if they try to take Kirkuk back (a Kurdish city).

France? Why, because they want to keep their multi-billion dollar oil deals with Saddam and Jacques Chirac doesn't want his close personal friend to be removed from power?

Should we stop because of protestors? You know, those people that could be spending their time volunteering at a hospital or something to help people instead of taking up the precious time of our police forces when they could be out stopping significant crime somewhere.

In closing, God bless the troops fighting for our freedoms, and even bless all those protesters, as hypocritical as they may be.
