AMD has officially launched its Ryzen Threadripper (Pro) 9000 series at Computex 2025, targeting both high-end desktop (HEDT) and professional workstation markets. Notably, the desktop versions feature an impressive 64 cores, while the workstation variants boast an astounding 96 cores. These processors, designed to fit into the existing socket, showcase an intriguing architecture, particularly when viewed without heat spreaders, revealing their multiple chiplets (CCDs) that each contain eight cores. Interestingly, the HEDT models do not utilize all available chips, resulting in a total of 32 cores being absent in the final configuration of the 64-core variant.

Built on the advanced Zen 5 architecture, the new Threadripper CPUs support DDR5-6400 memory directly across eight channels, enhancing data throughput and efficiency. The workstation lineup consists of six models, ranging from a robust 96 cores down to 12 cores, while the HEDT segment includes three processors with core counts of 64, 32, and 24. The HEDT versions maintain the previous four memory channels but benefit from ECC support with DDR5-6400 RDIMM.

Initial benchmarks have positioned the Threadripper 9000 series favorably against competitors, particularly Intel's Xeon processors, which fall short due to their lower core counts. AMD anticipates performance improvements of 13 to 23 percent compared to previous models, depending on workloads. Additionally, the new CPUs leverage AVX-512 capabilities for enhanced processing, utilizing a full 512-bit data path and significantly improved memory performance.
