IDE Raid vs. a single SCSI drive. Weeeellll, if you need 4 drive IDE RAID0 array to beat a single Seagate Cheetah 15K, imagine what you would need to beat a 4 Cheetah 15K SCSI RAID-0 Array! Don't forget that SCSI raid arrays are self-contained subsystems and the controllers have their own processor along with some serious cache memory. Reality chek here - Many articles have been posted on the topic of IDE RAID0 vs SCSI RAID0 using comparable drives. Usually the outcome is that the SCSI array held a large performance edge, but at a much higher price. The entire IDE array, controller and all, would cost about the same price as a single SCSI drive - OUCH!. The bottom line is: If you want to go fast for the least bucks, do the IDE RAID0 thing. Sure it is not as fast or reliable as the SCSI alternative but is a whole lot cheaper. If you are running a critical server that needs screaming performance as well as the best reliability - SCSI RAID is the only way to do it right.
