Performance Improvements As with most CATALYSTâ„¢ releases performance has increased in various situations. The following performance gains are noticed: Direct3D driver efficiency has improved considerably. Significant performance gains are noted in multiple "CPU-bound" cases, including 3DMark2001, Aquamark 3, Comanche4, Dungeon Siege, and Unreal Tournament 2003 and 2004. Typical improvements are in the 1-5% range. OpenGL driver efficiency is also improved. Older OpenGL games such as Quake III Arena and Wolfenstein - Enemy Territory show small improvement (1-2%) at low resolutions. Call of Duty framerates are up approximately 4%. Doom3 improves considerably more (as much as 12% on some product configurations) as a result of the same software efficiency improvements.

The openGL module in the 4.8's is an older version number than the 4.9 beta openGL, but it's date is newer. The testing I've read about seems to indicate that the performance is on par with the 4.9 beta set on Doom3. :)

The 4.8s perform about the same as the 4.9s in Doom3, well within margin of error. ;)

See those 'resolved game issues' section? Those are actually listed under the 'known issues' section on the ATI website. What is more interesting, is that like the two betas, I have no flickering texture issue in City of Heroes unlike the 4.7 driver.

no 4.8 stands for the 8th release in 2004. Its just luck that the month and release number are the same. Check out previous releases.
