Nvidia posted new Linux drivers today on July 28th, 2003. The new set sports a version number of 1.0-4496. Release highlights include GeForce FX 5900 support, support for Active Stereo + TwinView, initial support for APM power management and improved OpenGL performance when rendering to multiple buffers (such as when using a stereo visual and rendering to GL_LEFT_AND_RIGHT). ReiserFS is a filesystem based on plug-in based object-oriented balanced tree algorithms developed mostly by Hans Reiser from Namesys. ReiserFS 4 is scheduled for a release this summer and Namesys have now unleashed a couple of benchmarks. Reiser4 was benchmarked against ext3 and ReiserFS 3. Reiser4 turns out to be way faster than V3, and for ext3, why don't you check out the results yourself? Hans Reiser states: "These benchmarks mean to me that our performance is now good enough to ship V4 to users", and he will be probably sending in a patch within the next couple of weeks to be included in the 2.6/2.5 kernel.

Savagenews.com reports that a new Red Hat Linux beta (codename Severn) is now available. As shown on the schedule, the beta 1 testing period will last from July 21 to mid-August. CNet reports that a group of Xbox security researchers say they have found a way to run Linux on the Xbox game console without a so-called mod chip and will go public with the technique if Microsoft won't talk to them about releasing an official Linux boot loader. The researchers say they want Microsoft to release a "signed" Linux boot loader - software that runs when a computer starts up to load and give control to the operating system - that would allow Xbox users to run the open-source operating system on the console without installing a chip.

Linux Compatible.org sends word that SuSE Linux 8.2 is now available for download!

While SuSE does not provide easily install-able ISO images for download, their 8.2 directory has been uploaded to provide a method to install SuSE's Professional Edition directly from FTP servers.
