Linux From Scratch 4.0 Out

Published by Newsfactory 0

Linux From Scratch (LFS) is a project that provides you with the steps necessary to build your own custom Linux system.

The most important reason for LFS's existence is teaching people how a Linux system works internally. Building an LFS system teaches you about all that makes Linux tick, how things work together, and depend on each other. And most importantly, how to customize it to your own taste and needs.

One of the key benefits of LFS is that you are in control over your system without having to rely on somebody else's Linux implementation. You are in the driver's seat now and are able to dictate every single thing such as the directory layout and boot script setup. You will also know exactly where, why and how programs are installed.

Microsoft Spying? Linux Is Looking Better

Published by Newsfactory 1

This just in from IeXbeta.

What you are about to read is a true story.

China thinks Microsoft software contains secretly embedded code that the United States government can manipulate at will. So, in case of war between the two countries, a Pentagon official can hit a switch and--presto!--cripple China's computing infrastructure. A senior Microsoft executive, who often confers with the Chinese (sorry, no names), told me this tale. I thought he was joking.

He wasn't. Some people in the Chinese government actually believe it's true.

Will UT2003 support linux well?

Published by Newsfactory 0

Here's another post by Mark Rein's top dog @Epic Games Inc

Linux is now up and running pretty well. I've been told that we should be able to release the Linux client and server executables around the same time as the windows version ships. Official tech support isn't provided for the Linux versions. Currently Linux will only work well with Nvidia cards - apparently ATI's OpenGL Linux and Mac drivers don't support texture compression. Hopefully this is something they will soon fix. Mac development is just underway so it will still be a little while before it's done.

Xbox Linux 0.2 released

Published by Newsfactory 0

The Xbox is a gaming console by Microsoft. It consists of very powerful IBM-PC-based hardware, runs a stripped-down version of the Windows 2000 kernel and, for anti-piracy reasons, allows only games to run.

The Xbox Linux Project aims to provide a version of GNU/Linux for the Xbox, so that it can be used as an ordinary computer. Linux should make use of all Xbox hardware and allow to install and run software from standard i386 Linux distributions. An Xbox running Linux may be very useful as a desktop computer, as a (web) server or as a node in a Linux cluster.

Xbox Linux 0.1 released!

Today the Xbox Linux project announced that it had succeeded in fully booting Linux on the Microsoft(R) Xbox(TM) Gaming System. The free operating system Linux is able to be booted either from flash memory, or (more easily) from a CD inserted into the machine. (The Xbox still needs to have a modchip fitted to allow it to run unsigned code; however these are widely available and start from $30).
