IDC says AMD64 threatens Intel's Itanic

MARKET RESEARCH firm IDC said sales of servers using the Intel Itanium were likely to be less this year because of competition from AMD's 64-bit X86 chips.
In a webcast, IDC said that the Itanium will be challenged by AMD's emerging X86-64 platform. Intel estimates it sold over 100,000 units last year. That means that AMD's claim that it would sell more of its 64-bit chips by the end of the year than Intel has sold Itaniums since its launch are likely to be correct.
