If you're like me, you woke up to an e-mail inbox stuffed with offers to refinance the mortgage on a house you may not own, refill ink cartridges for a printer model you don't use, and shrink or enlarge parts of your body, some of which you don't even have.

It sounds crazy, but just remember the reason you get any direct marketing (aka junk mail) is because it works. The cost of contacting all the people who don't buy is less than the profit made on those who do. But direct marketers are getting better. Today, they can determine with greater accuracy whether you are more likely to buy a new shampoo or a new Subaru based on your ZIP code.
