PuTTY Portable is a free and Open Source implementation of Telnet and SSH for Win32 and Unix platforms, along with an XTerm terminal emulator. Installer version is also available.

PuTTY Portable is a client program that allows you to run a remote session on a computer over a network using SSH, Telnet, or Rlogin network protocols. When you run PuTTY Portable on a Windows machine and connect it with a Unix machine, it opens a window. You can then type anything into that window, which will be sent straight to the Unix machine.

Similarly, everything that the Unix machine sends back is displayed in the window. This enables you to work on the Unix machine as if you were sitting at its console, even when you are somewhere else.

PuTTY Portable is a remote terminal that supports various security protocols. It allows users to control the SSH encryption key and protocol version and offers alternate ciphers such as AES, 3DES, RC4, Blowfish, DES, and Public-key authentication. PuTTY uses its own PPK format for key files protected by a Message Authentication Code (MAC).

In addition to supporting SSO through GSSAPI, PuTTY can emulate control sequences from Xterm, VT220, VT102, or ECMA-48 terminal emulation. It also allows local, remote, or dynamic port forwarding with SSH (including X11 forwarding) and supports IPv6 in the network communication layer. The SSH protocol also supports the zlib@openssh.com delayed compression scheme. PuTTY Portable can also be used with local serial port connections.

PuTTY Portable includes command-line SCP and SFTP clients called "pscp" and "psftp," respectively. Plink, a command-line connection tool, is also bundled and used for non-interactive sessions.
