Proxmox Backup Server 3.4 released

Published by

Proxmox Backup Server 3.4 has officially been released, continuing to build on its strong foundation with enhancements aimed at improving performance and user experience. This version is based on Debian 12.10 ("Bookworm") and employs the stable default Linux kernel version 6.8.12-9, while also providing an opt-in for kernel version 6.14. The update introduces a series of optimizations, particularly in garbage collection (GC) processes, which now operate more quickly and efficiently, streamlining the removal of unreferenced backup data chunks.

One of the standout features in this release is the ability to perform granular backup snapshot selections for synchronization jobs, which enhances security for offsite backups. Users can now exclusively sync encrypted or verified backup snapshots, improving data integrity during transfers.

Additionally, a new statically linked binary for the Proxmox Backup client has been developed, allowing users to create file-level backups for various Linux hosts outside of the Proxmox Virtual Environment (VE). The update also boosts throughput for tape backups by increasing the number of worker threads when reading chunks, which can dramatically enhance performance in specific configurations.

Proxmox Backup Server 3.4 is designed to integrate seamlessly into the Proxmox Virtual Environment, enabling users to easily add it as a backup target by simply incorporating a datastore.

Looking ahead, the Proxmox team remains committed to incorporating community feedback, ensuring that future updates continue to meet user needs and adapt to the evolving landscape of open-source technologies. The implementation of newer kernel versions and the inclusion of ZFS 2.2.7 with compatibility patches further demonstrate Proxmox's dedication to staying at the forefront of technology to support the latest hardware and software advancements
