PHP 8.3.20 and 8.4.6 packages for Fedora RHEL released

Published by

Remi Collet has announced the release of PHP versions 8.3.20 and 8.4.6 for Fedora and RHEL-based Linux distributions. These packages can be found in the remi-modular repository for Fedora version 40 and above, as well as for Enterprise Linux 8 and newer distributions such as RHEL, Alma, CentOS, and Rocky Linux. The new RPMs are compatible with both x86_64 and aarch64 architectures.

Notably, there are no security updates for this month, which means that versions 8.1.32 and 8.2.28 will not receive updates. Additionally, PHP version 8.0 has reached its end of life and is no longer supported by the PHP project. The new versions are also available as Software Collections in the remi-safe repository.

For installation, users can utilize the Configuration Wizard to select their desired version and installation mode. The simplest way to replace the default PHP installation with version 8.4 is by using the command: `dnf module switch-to php:remi-8.4/common`. Alternatively, users can opt for a parallel installation of version 8.4 with the command `yum install php84`. The same process applies for PHP version 8.3.

In addition, PHP version 8.4.6 is now available in Fedora Rawhide, with specific versions for Fedora 42 (8.4.6), Fedora 41 (8.3.20), and Fedora 40 (8.3.20).

Key updates in these releases include:
- EL-10 RPMs built using RHEL-10.0-beta
- EL-9 RPMs built using RHEL-9.5
- EL-8 RPMs built using RHEL-8.10
- The intl extension now utilizes libicu74 (version 74.2)
- The mbstring extension for EL builds now uses oniguruma5php (version 6.9.10), replacing the outdated system library
- The oci8 extension is now linked to the RPM of Oracle Instant Client version 23.7 for x86_64 and aarch64 architectures
- Many other extensions are available, as listed on the PHP extensions RPM status page.

For developers looking to migrate, resources are available for transitioning from PHP 8.2.x to 8.3.x, and from 8.3.x to 8.4.x.

In conclusion, the latest releases of PHP for Fedora and RHEL-based systems bring important updates and improvements, enhancing compatibility and usability for developers leveraging PHP in their projects
