Following on from my review of GeCube's Radeon X800 Pro this week, the most interesting questions I seemed to be asked about it were all surrounding Doom 3 performance. So, as a result, I vowed to do some more Doom 3 benchmarking. This testing soon took on a life of its own, and very quickly snowballed into a much more thorough look at how the Radeon X800 Pro handles Doom 3.

The Sempron is basically an AthlonXP ?Thoroughbred? chip re-badged, this means that it has slightly lower performance than the Athlon XP Barton (Caused mainly by the lesser cache on the Sempron - 256k level 2 cache vs. 512k on the Barton). The model numbers also vary slightly from the Thoroughbred cores of old. AMD have based their Sempron model numbers on the performance of the chip in several benchmarks when compared to other Sempron processors. These benchmarks include Sysmark 2004 and Content Creation Winstone.

Here is where I conclude my love/hate relationship with the Coolermaster's Hyper 6. There is very little middle ground with this cooler. All the good and bad points are exceptional and should be definitely considered if you are thinking about purchasing this heatsink.

One of the differences of this card noticeable immediately is found in the software bundle...the full version of Far Cry for FREE! Shane over at TweakTown has compared two new Radeon X800 graphics cards from Gigabyte today - the X800PRO and X800XT PE. Hardware Pacers has posted a review on the NVIDIA GeForce PCX 5900 (P4 3.4EE vs. 3.6E)

The overclocking results showed great performance increases. Although the temp rose 6°C the heat indictor can be enabled so if the heat goes above the threshold the card will be reset to stock frequencies. The best overclock was 442/821 giving 635 points gain in 3DMark03 and 868 gain in 3DMark2001 SE. Overall the card is an awesome overclocker with its increase of the core of 92MHz and its RAM at an astonishing 271MHz. In conclusion, 16336 in 3DMark2001 SE and 5755 in 3DMark03 will give the user decent gaming in all games available today.
