MSI lets slip CeBit Goodies

Just spotted this bit of Info over at TechReport.

We've been in something of a news lull in the lead-up to CeBit. The big European trade show starts today, though, and we're already starting to see bits of news seep out. The folks at MSI have let slip with some info about new motherboards that gives us some idea what to expect from this year's show.

Fido over at The Inquirer is reporting that Nvidia's and ATI's upcoming R420 and NV40 chips will sport 16 pipelines for the NV40 and 12 pipelines for the R420.

PenStar Systems have fired off a few questions to Brian Burke and friends at NVIDIA: regarding GDDR-3! Here's a snip.

Last year ATI announced that it was working with memory manufacturers to develop GDDR-3. DDR-2 had already been used in products from both NVIDIA and ATI (GeForce FX 5800 series and the Radeon 9800 Pro 256 MB respectively). The problem with DDR-2 for graphics is that even though it runs at a slightly lower voltage, the first examples ran very, very hot.

NV40 Ultra and Non-Ultra Details Leak

Fido over at The Inquirer reports we can now confirm that Nvidia will have two versions of the NV40 chip once it is ready to show it to the world.

As is now traditional, Nvidia will have one extremely expensive card that will cost about ?/$499. This card is expected to be faster clocked and it will have faster memory as well.

AMD to Unleash Athlon 64 FX-55 Processor in May?

Xbitlabs reports that according to a recent roadmap, AMD Athlon 64 FX-53 clocked at 2.40GHz processors will come out this month, while the Athlon 64 FX-55 chip with 2.60GHz frequency will show up as early as in May. The latter microprocessor was originally scheduled for Q4 2004, but is reported to be unleashed in the late Q2 2004.
