VIA P4X400 and SiS648 Pentium 4 Chipsets Review

Published by Newsfactory 0

The situation in the chipset market is changing fast nowadays. New chipsets used to become available to mainboard makers a few times a year, but now I have to review them monthly. And not just one but several products are often to be reviewed. So what's happening to the market? Why are the manufacturers trying to smother the market in their new wares?

I guess there is a simple answer. Competition. Competition among both: chipset makers and processor manufacturers, the latter promoting further innovations for their platforms to get more customers. Added the several constantly improving alternative memory technologies available and the present transition to the use of advanced standards: AGP 8x, USB 2.0, IEEE 1394, ATA/133, SerialATA and so on, there're wide possibilities to produce chipsets supporting various sets of various innovations. Rivaling chipset makers are racing to implement new technologies and announce new products. All to be in the lead. As only lazy one doesn't make chipsets nowadays, no wonder so many alternative variants are available.

ATI's Radeon 9700 Versus NVIDIA's NV30

Published by Newsfactory 0

Just got word that Tech-Report.com have posted an editorial called ATI's Radeon 9700 versus NVIDIA's NV30 - Understanding the next generation of graphics chips. Here's a byte from their article:

We've talked about NV30's potential leg up on ATI's R300. ATI's advantage right now is much simpler: they have a great chip ready to roll immediately. The Radeon 9700 should simply outclass anything else on the market by miles when it hits store shelves. I've seen the Radeon 9700 demonstrate in real time many of the capabilities discussed above, and I can tell you: it's for real.

NVIDIA's challenge is a little more complex. NVIDIA is banking on making the NV30 superior to the competition by harnessing a pair of new technologies: TSMC's 0.13-micron chip fabrication process and some kind of DDR-II-like memory. ATI played it safe and went with 0.15-micron fab technology for manufacturing the R300. NVIDIA's use of 0.13-micron tech could give NV30 lower costs, less heat, and higher clock speeds, but TSMC's ability to produce 0.13-micron chips in volume is unproven. The same goes for DDR-II memory, which holds promise, but could prove difficult and costly to implement or manufacture. NVIDIA risks delaying NV30 significantly by employing bleeding-edge tech.

Details On Sony's PlayStation 3 Chip

Published by Newsfactory 0

IBM, Sony, and Toshiba have wrapped up the design for the inner workings of a mysterious new chip called "Cell."

The new multimedia processor called "Cell," touted as a "supercomputer on a chip," is well on the way to completion, IBM says. As previously reported, the chip could end up inside the PlayStation 3, and elements of its design are expected in future server chips from IBM.

The processor's design is still under wraps, but the companies say Cell's capabilities will allow it to deliver one trillion calculations per second (teraflop) or more of floating-point calculations. With integer math, it will have the ability to do more than 1 teraflop, roughly 100 times more than a single Pentium 4 chip running at 2.5GHz.
