Desi Rhoden, president of Advanced Memory International gave a reserved comment on the expected performance value of DDR333 memory: "Right now, if you take a look at a DDR266 with a CAS latency of 2 and compare that with a DDR333, which happens to be a CAS latency of 2.5, the performance delta between those two systems is not a lot," he said.
In theory DDR333 could perform about 30 percent better in terms of bandwidth compared to DDR266. But real-world situations show that the higher-frequency chips only add a few percentage points to system performance. Early market researches point to rather low sales volume of DDR333 - at least in 2002 - because of a) the rather low performance gain and b) the memory industries preparations to introduce the successor of DDR namely DDR-II. If the situation changes depends on mainly two issues: 1. If it is possible to manufacture a stable DDR400 184-pin module and 2. the planned transition to DDR-II which will feature 240-pin modules.
So DDR333 might dominate the memory market in 2003 but we'll all have to prepare for some technology changes in the timeframe of 2003/2004 at the latest.
