What is the hardest thing about making software to benchmark a computer?

To support all the different configurations ?out there? not only by supporting all the current (and legacy) technologies and optimising for each of them, but to also keep a balance by not favouring one over the other. This means multiple code paths or an un-optimised common path that does not favour any specific technology even though better performance could have been achieved by optimising for a certain technology.
