Samba 4.23.0rc4 Release Candidate Now Available for Testing

Published by

Samba has released the fourth release candidate (RC) version of its 4.23.0 software, available for testing. This version introduces several key enhancements, including the default activation of SMB3 Unix Extensions, support for SMB3 over QUIC (Quick UDP Internet Connections), and a modernized write-time update logic that aligns with contemporary Windows servers. Additionally, the update features the initial version of the smb_prometheus_endpoint utility, which exports server metrics in a format compatible with Prometheus, and improvements to Clustered Trivial Database (CTDB) functionalities.

Notably, Samba 4.23.0rc4 includes per-share profiling statistics, allowing users to gather performance metrics on a share-by-share basis, which is particularly advantageous for environments with numerous active shares. The update also offers a new backup option in samba-tool domain backup that excludes confidential attributes, making it suitable for lab environments.

However, some features have been removed or updated, including modifications to the smb.conf file, where the smbd profiling share parameter is no longer available, and the default settings for transport parameters have been revised. Users are urged to refer to the known issues list and report any bugs or discussions on the samba-technical mailing list or IRC channels to facilitate further development.

For those interested in testing this release, the source code and patch files are available for download, and the release notes provide detailed information about the changes made.

Extension:
As Samba continues to evolve, user feedback from this release candidate will be crucial in shaping the final version of 4.23.0. The community's engagement in reporting bugs and discussing potential improvements is encouraged, as it fosters a collaborative environment for development. Future updates may further streamline performance enhancements, broaden support for emerging technologies, and refine user experience based on testers' insights. Furthermore, as cloud and hybrid environments become increasingly prevalent, the integration of functionalities such as SMB3 over QUIC positions Samba as a competitive solution in modern networking and file-sharing contexts. Users are encouraged to keep an eye out for additional updates and enhancements in future releases as the Samba team continues to innovate and adapt to the changing technological landscape
