Kaspersky Lab, a leading developer of secure content management systems, has detected a new worm, Net-Worm.Perl.Santy.a. This worm infects certain web sites by exploiting a vulnerability in phpBB, a popular package used to create Internet forums. Santy.a is spreading rapidly, and has caused an epidemic. However, this does not directly affect end users - although the worm infects web sites, it does not infect computers used to view these sites.

NetCraft reports a security flaw in Microsoft's ASP.NET technology could allow intruders to enter password-protected areas of a web site by altering a URL. A fix is not yet available, but Microsoft is offfering guidelines to help ASP.NET users secure their sites against intrusion attempts. The flaw exists only in ASP.NET, not ASP (Active Server Pages).

New Trojan Kills Adware

A new Trojan horse program that attacks and removes troublesome advertising software, known as "adware," is circulating on the Internet, according to antivirus company Symantec. The program, called Downloader.Lunii, was discovered earlier this week. When run, it attempts to kill off computer processes and delete files used by common adware programs like Powerscan and BargainBuddy. However, Lunii is not entirely benevolent. Like other Trojan horse programs, it also modifies the configuration of Microsoft Windows machines and attempts to download files from a remote location, Symantec warns.
