A new build of Windows XP SP 2 has escaped - now v1194 and built on the 1st of April - (no April fool). This looks as though it is just an update to 1185 - still just patches and fixes.

This week, Microsoft revealed that the company will expand its Microsoft Office 2003 lineup to include new basic and professional enterprise editions and a developer-oriented release called Visual Studio Tools for Office. But not all Office products will be available at retail locations, and the most compelling version for consumers, Office 2003 Basic Edition, will ship only with new PCs. According to my sources, Microsoft will launch Office 2003 in early June at Microsoft TechEd 2003, and the product will ship later that month.

Hardware-Created ASF Files Stop Playing in Media Player 9 Series. When you try to play back certain ASF files created by hardware devices, you may receive the following error message approximately three or four minutes after playback has started: 0xC00D1199 -- Windows Media Player cannot play the file. The file is either corrupt or the Player does not support the format you are trying to play.

We have been informed by ATI that the information we received about an incompatibility is wrong. Microsoft pulled and re-released DX 9.0a for some other reason which could not be verified as of yet. The release date now is 3/26/2003. A quick comparison using DXDIAG did not reveal any changes.

Shortly after the initial release of the silent update, which was well hidden within the MS Download Center website, the Redmond based company removed the download. [Ed.: Read original story here]. Now the website just displays a message that The download you requested is unavailable. DirectX 9.0a was a minor update to the debut version from last December. Most notably was a bugfix that caused MSN Messenger to malfunction when DirectX 9 was installed. Next to that the release only included minor fixes according to Microsoft. An SDK was not available. Windows Messenger 5 supports 3 instant messaging services: MSN .NET, Exchange IM (part of Exchange 2000), and RealTime Communication Server (RTC, codename Greenwich). RTC uses an Internet-standard IM protocol called SIP (Session Initation Protocol). This client also supports Ink messages for tablet PC's. Simply install this leaked build on any tablet PC to send Ink messages. For those without a tablet PC, you can still receive Ink messages from your friends with tablet PCs.

Here's an update to the Windows 9X STREWTH! to 40MB story.

On Monday 17th March 2003, The Inquirer ran an article with the subject "Man claims he's reduce Windows OS to 40Mb". On reading the article I phoned the editor of The Inquirer (Mike Magee) to express my surprise that this chap had only managed to reduce Windows 9x down to 40Mb. I explained that around 1995/1996; I had created a version of Windows 3.11 which self booted from a single DOS floppy disk thus allowing me to carry around a 1 disk bootable version SOLitaire!

Digging around through Microsoft sites I have found some more patches for the most popular web browser around that were released after the Update for February 2003, Cumulative Patch for Internet Explorer 6 Service Pack 1. Microsoft offers several patches that affect the same IE core files so I outline which update is necessary to download and which might me obsolete. Therefore pay special attention to all notes formatted in red.
