Alexey Nikolaychuk, the author of RivaTuner, has found the mechanism, which NVIDIA cards use to set 12 or 16 pipelines on GeForce 6800 and 6800GT/Ultra, respectively. Of course, if a card has 4 offline pipelines defective, it will produce artefacts and we can't guarantee that any GeForce 6800 can be remade into a 6800GT.

Ace's Hardware have thrown up their look at IBM's POWER5 processor!

A new processor has appeared at the top of the SPECmine Top 20 for SPECfp2000: IBM's new dual-core, dual-thread POWER5. IBM has published a variety of benchmark results for its new POWER5-based systems: the 2-way p5 520, 4-way p5 550, and 16-way p5-570. The results are quite impressive thanks to a number of improvements over POWER4 to the core and cache/memory subsystem. All levels of the cache/memory heirarchy have been improved.

X-bitlabs have thrown up their latest article which looks at the power consumption of contemporary graphics cards! Part 1 covers ATI video cards.

Well, ATI?s claims that the RADEON X800 XT Platinum Edition consumes no more than 70W are fully confirmed. Curiously enough, the biggest portion of the consumption falls on the additional power connector, while the AGP slot only supplies about 10W in the Burn mode. When overclocking, I increased the GPU frequency by 4.7%, and the memory frequency by 8.7%. The power consumption grew up slightly: by 4.6% in the Idle mode and by 4.2% in the Burn mode. Even overclocked, the card never reached a power consumption of 70W

Just got word that Beyond3D have thrown up their perview of ATi's Mobility Radeon 9800 GPU!

Today ATI is announcing their latest notebook graphics chip, Mobility Radeon 9800. ATI state that they are targeting the emerging "desknote" market, which have bigger power budgets and better thermal environments and their desktop and mobile teams have collaborated on to mix the full performance of their desktop parts with the mobile integration and power management features, including clock gating, to cater for the "Mobile Gaming Enthusiast".
