Trouble for ATI? R520 Issues @ PenStar Systems

Published by Newsfactory 0

I have received some rather interesting information about some of the issues facing ATI at this time. Several months ago it was suggested that ATI would be unveiling the R520 chip in April, then that time was pushed back to May, then it was rumored that it would be released during Computex. Now, all of those times have passed, and so far no next generation product from ATI. Several pieces of information have dropped into my hands, and I thought that I would share them here.

AMD FX-57 likely to arrive in two weeks

Published by Newsfactory 0

The CPU itself is a logical step for AMD: the Venice core proved to be a really good product in terms of yields and clocking capabilities, so seeing AMD Athlon 64 FX-57 running at a cool 2.81GHz wasn't such a suprise. The only thing that still bothers me was the fact that the CPU-Z read FSB clock at 247 MHz on a reference ATi Xpress 200 motherboard, but that's an obvious misread - I used v1.28, since the BIOS was showing 200 MHz HT link speed with x5 ratio.

Intel Readying Dual-Core Desktop Dothan Microprocessor

It?s a known fact that Intel has failed to deliver a viable desktop solution since it launched its Prescott microprocessor. In addition to delivering a poor and expensive solution, the abundance of technologies with its 915/925 chipsets left the platform at an almost destructive state with memory and motherboard manufacturers frustrated at the lack of sub-par sales.

We learned that R520 might be quite hot as it is the biggest chip ever with its 300+ millions transistors. Since its 90 nanometre its kind of logical that you can place quite a lot of pipelines under its hood and it turns out that ATI has managed to pack in 32 pipes.

Computex 2005 Day 3

The show stealer for Albatron was clearly the ?ATOP? AGP to PCI-E converter cards. ATOP allows a user to plug an NVIDIA AGP video card into a PCI-E riser ? allowing a user to upgrade to an nForce4 board without getting rid of their old card. While the implications are nice, the practicality of the card is still being tested and there are also issues of clearance that have not been addressed yet.
