Windows XP Tweaking Guide

Published by Newsfactory 0

Just got word that Neoseeker have post a new Windows XP Tweaking Guide! Here's a snip.

I have broken this guide into 6 parts. Networking, file system, memory performance, freeing up memory, startup/shutdown and then the other stuff. I've tried to pack as much performance related tweaking here as I can but there's always more to be uncovered. I will update this article as frequently as possible. I know there's a million tweaks that I'm missing here but I am trying to keep this guide dedicated to tweaks that directly affect your performance. I'll put together a second guide about the annoyances and other things but keep in mind this is ONLY performance stuff. If you know of something that affects the performance quite a bit and it's not listed here please post a thread in our Windows forum.

333 MHz FSB for the Athlon

Published by Newsfactory 0

Lost Circuits have posted an in-depth analysis of the upcoming switch for AMD processors to 333MHz FSB! Here's a snip.

To get back to the overall clock frequency, what we need is a frequency that is a common multiple for both 133 and 166 MHz, which leaves 666, 1000, 1333, 1666 and 2000 MHz as possible choices. Given the fact that any CPU can only run at multipliers above OR below 13 x, the 2GHz clock speed falls out since it would require a 12 x and a 15 x multiplier. Theoretically, it is still possible but from a practical standpoint, unlocking and relocking a CPU is not a very efficient way of collecting data, especially if the requirement is to run all benchmarks on the identical system where identical means that we won't even swap processors.

Flashing The BIOS Guide

Published by Newsfactory 0

Just got word that PC911 have posted a guide for flashing your bios! a Good read for all you newbies too Flashing? LOL oh no Rancho*s flashing again! here's a snip.

The hazards of BIOS flashing

As described earlier, the BIOS is a crucial component of your computer since it is always the first program that runs when you turn the machine on. If the BIOS does not run, the machine cannot boot. Therefore it is very important that a BIOS upgrade is performed properly. If it fails, it can permanently ruin the BIOS, resulting in your computer becoming a door stop. Common reasons for BIOS flashes gone bad are power failure during the flashing process, and flashing the BIOS with an incorrect BIOS version. Because of these dangers you do not flash a BIOS just for shits and giggles, but only if there is a very good reason.

Refresh Rate Fix for Nvidia Detonator 40.41

Published by Newsfactory 2

X-bios have post a guide that will hopefully simplify the new hexadecimal system of setting Refresh Rates in Detonator 40.41 ! Here's a snip.

Now, to eliminate the Win2K/XP refresh rate problem we want to specify custom refresh rates with the corresponding resolutions and bit depths. In other words we only want Windows to use the HIGHEST refresh rate supported by our monitor in any given mode, not the LOWEST as it will if left to it's own devices. We do this by adding '80**' to the hexadecimal refresh rate.

AGP Aperture Size Examined on Tweak3D.Net

Published by Newsfactory 1

Just got word that Tweak3D.Net have posted a new AGP Aperture Size Examined Guide! Here's a snip.

Tweak3D prides itself in being one of the few sites online that never says, ?Enough is enough.? Our PCs are never fast enough, and we always question how we can make them even faster. We always say, ?Hey, what does this setting do??, or ?Hmm, I wonder if my house will burn down if I turn the speed up a little bit.? No, we don?t think there?s such a thing as too much computing power, and our video cards are no exception.

Video cards offer so many features these days that it?s often easy to overlook a couple. Sometimes we might miss important features that are right in front of our eyes, and this is where we came up with the idea to tweak that golden nugget in our BIOS setup, the ?AGP Aperture Size?, which from here on out, we?ll refer to as ?AAS?.

Solve for NVCPL Problem with new Det's 40.41

Published by Newsfactory 3

The new 40.41 Detonators' Control Panel doesn't work if you had installed a localized older Detonator before. To solve the problem, simply delete the 2 obsolete Files nvrsXX.dll and nvcpXX.hlp in your windowssystem32 folder , where XX is your language code. Additionally the file nvqtwk.dll from older drivers isn't needed anymore so you should also delete it to be sure.
