Published by Newsfactory 0

PC Stats have thrown up a new beginners guide to preventing Data Theft from a stolen Laptop! Here's a snip.

Portable computers are made for traveling and computing at the same time, and are thus incredibly valuable for their weight. We're talking 'carton of cigarettes' dollars-to-weight ratio here. Consequently, laptop's make a tempting target for thieves and have been known to go AWOL with distressing frequency when compared to less expensive things like your baggage full of Hawaiian shirts.

Essential utilities

Published by Newsfactory 0

We have just published a short article covering applications that we at Dead-Fish just can't live without. These utilities are among the first installed after formatting hard drives. We pointedly ignore Microsoft Office, Paint Shop Pro, Winzip, virus checkers and so on, focussing on less common programmes that we always install. Ones that make the machine work just so or that we regard as essential.

Image Quality Analysis Fall 2003

Published by Newsfactory 8

Anandtech have thown up their Image Quality Analysis Fall 2003: A Glance Through the Looking Glass Guide! which looks at image quality between nVidia's GeForce FX 5950 and ATI's Radeon 9800 XT! Here's a snip.

The question of image quality is much more complicated than determining which video card renders a scene the fastest. Years ago, we could say that the image that came out of two different computer systems should be exactly the same because developers controlled every aspect of how their program ran with software, rather than leaving some decisions to the hardware on which the program was running.

Dual Xeon, Dual Opteron and Quad Opteron

Published by Newsfactory 0

Ace's Hardware have thrown up a new server guide, which looks at Dual Xeon, Dual Opteron and Quad Opteron servers! Here's a byte.

In our last article about x86 server CPUs, the Opteron 244 made a quite an impression when compared to the Xeon DP. In many of our real-world server benchmarks, the 1.8 GHz Opteron bested the 2.8 GHz Xeon DP. Of course, neither Intel nor AMD have been sitting still since that time, and to make the Xeon DP more competitive, Intel equipped its midrange server CPU with a 1 MB L3-cache. Correspondingly, 2.2 GHz Opteron 248 and 848 processors are available this month.

How To Make Your XP Professional Machine An MP3 server

Published by Newsfactory 1

The Crucible have thrown up a new guide for turning your XP Professional machine into an MP3 server! Here's a byte.

Well, I set this up basically for one reason. I like music. I like my music, and have rather eclectic/eccentric taste. So before I left the house for work the other day, I thought I would make my MP3 collection accessible from the web, so I could listen at work. Now, I'm no bootlegger, I'm just a nerd that keeps all of his CD's on his hard drive (in MP3 format), because my PC is the entertainment center in my home (I don't have cable, but I have broadband - that should clue you in to where I'm at). So now that we've established why, let's get on to the disclaimers.
