Quake III Source Code Released

id Software has now released the full source code of Quake III Arena, their multiplayer first-person shooter of December 1999. The code is released under the GPL, so be sure to read the licensing documentation to see what you can and cannot do with it, and this distribution contains not only the source code but also various compiler tools and build 200f of the Q3Radiant map editor.

Timeshift - Hands On

We've seen time manipulation in Prince of Persia: Sands of Time, but its implementation was fairly weak. However, a new game under development called TimeShift looks set to introduce a new angle of gameplay into the done-to-death FPS genre. Hexus.net has a first look at TimeShift, in which you can manipulate time to achieve various goals. Within your time bubble, time remains unaffected, so if you get hit by a bullet, you can't reverse things and forget all about it. The gameplay revolves around the different ways in which the player can manipulate time, rather than being a 'cool feature' that's been tacked onto the game. Will this be one of next years' big hits, or will it be a game that time forgets?

At QuakeCon today, id Software's annual event down in Texas, John Carmack announced that the Quake III source code will be released under the GPL, "hopefully some time next week," to be available on their FTP site.

Luckily, today was much better, and we got a sneak peak of the upcoming DOOM movie, Quake4, and got to hear John Carmack give his keynote. We also swung by the BYOC again and got some more pics of interesting rigs.
