Quake III Source Code Released
id Software has now released the full source code of Quake III Arena, their multiplayer first-person shooter of December 1999. The code is released under the GPL, so be sure to read the licensing documentation to see what you can and cannot do with it, and this distribution contains not only the source code but also various compiler tools and build 200f of the Q3Radiant map editor.
Timeshift - Hands On
We've seen time manipulation in Prince of Persia: Sands of Time, but its implementation was fairly weak. However, a new game under development called TimeShift looks set to introduce a new angle of gameplay into the done-to-death FPS genre. Hexus.net has a first look at TimeShift, in which you can manipulate time to achieve various goals. Within your time bubble, time remains unaffected, so if you get hit by a bullet, you can't reverse things and forget all about it. The gameplay revolves around the different ways in which the player can manipulate time, rather than being a 'cool feature' that's been tacked onto the game. Will this be one of next years' big hits, or will it be a game that time forgets?

Not content with ruling the next gen with its all conquering Unreal Engine 3 - which has been licensed by Microsoft for the 360, Sony for the PS3 and just about every serious next gen PC developer worth their salt - Epic Games has already begun the march to global hegemony in the next next generation, with work on the previously unheard of Unreal Engine 4, now revealed to have begun over two years ago.
GT Legends Demo
A playable demo for GT Legends is now online, offering the first opportunity to try out the historical racing simulation currently in the pits at SimBin. This work-in-progress demo allows you "to drive one of three FIA GTC-65 class cars against up to 10 computer controlled opponents, at the famous Dijon circuit (including two different layouts).
Dungeon Siege II Retail Patch v2.1
The first retail patch for Dungeon Siege II is now online, coinciding with the release of this fantasy 3D action role-playing sequel by Gas Powered Games. This version 2.1 update only addresses two GameSpy issues.

Quake III Source Code to Be Released
At QuakeCon today, id Software's annual event down in Texas, John Carmack announced that the Quake III source code will be released under the GPL, "hopefully some time next week," to be available on their FTP site.

As far as we can tell, Quake 4's multiplayer does indeed go after the speed and feel of Quake III's multiplayer, and it seems to do a pretty good job of re-creating it.
Quakecon 2005 - Day 1
Today marks the beginning of the tenth annual QuakeCon LAN party. QuakeCon is being held in the Gaylord Resort Hotel and Convention Center in Dallas, Texas and covers over 200,000 square feet with over 12 miles of Cat-5, 3000+ monitors and 1,470 gallons of Bawls, keeping gamers plugged in and on their toes throughout the non-stop 76 hour event. The night before the event, gamers were already lined up waiting to get their computers into the BYOC (bring your own computer) area.
