New Half-Life 2 Tech Demo and Steam Released

Published by

Fileplanet have a new Half-Life 2 technology demo showcasing DirectX 9 Effects, Now keep in mind that this is a technology demo, so it's not showing off gameplay. The area shown might not be in the final game. The monster in the demonstration just stands there idling, so you can see the effects done to its skin (which, I'll point out, are very cool.) In my opinion the roofs of the buildings are a bit too shiny to look right -- but again, they're showing off possible engine effects, not a final product.

The non-Beta version of Steam is out, only two days late.

While Steam has already made some significant strides in terms of its reliability, we think there's a lot of improvement yet to be done. If you haven't heard, Valve is planning on moving away from the old WonIDCD-Key system and make Steam required for playing Half-Life online.

We're not quite sure how Valve is going to get this all to work, handling authentication and patching for all the existing Half-Life users while at the same time eventually selling games like Half-Life 2 through the service, but if anybody can pull this off, it's Valve.
