HDiskDefrag can defragment your hard drive(s) as well as remove temporary files, recreate hiberfile.sys and more.HDiskDefrag might not be the prettiest defrag app out there with its simple gray and black interface, but it offers some features to allow you to skip steps typically required before you defragment. These steps are organized into a "before defragmenting" category. You can delete temporary files, recreate your hibernation file, deactivate paging, and delete Internet Explorer cache. Missing is the ability to remove the cache from modern browsers including Firefox and Google Chrome. Recreating your hibernation file, and deactivate paging are unchecked by default and should only be checked if you know what you're doing. The second set of steps allows you to choose options while defragmenting. You can defragment system files by name, last access, and last write, force sequential layout and optionally shut down after defrag. If you're not sure of any of the advanced setting, you should uncheck them or Google them. Overall, less savvy users should leave the settings as they are.The ability to run a detailed analysis is available and accurately determined our clean install of Windows did not need to be defragmented. The only option to defragment is called "Check" and repeats the analysis making that redundant. You're given the summary and more details afterward that most won't need, but still great to have. There are volume size and numerous cluster size details, for example. You can cancel at any time, and a summary with optional log file can be saved.HDiskDefrag isn't pretty, but it works well. We love the ability to clean temporary files before scanning although it could do more in that area. Scanning is fast and easy by just leaving the settings as they are. It's free and portable and another excellent choice in the Defragmentor category.
