We came across a fine piece of software called BootVis. BootVis is a system analyzer and boot optimization tool. Reports on PC sites show a decreased booting time of Windows XP up to 50%!
This tool comes from M$ and apparently rised from the Windows XP beta testing timeframe...

BootVis works in 2 steps (no installation is required. Simply run the .exe file): First BootVis must analyze your system: Terminate all programs running on your computer, since the program must restart your PC. Select File -> New -> Next Boot + Driver Trace. Then a new window, which you acknowledge unchanged with OK, opens. A window opens in which a countdown for the restart runs. In the second step BootVis optimizes the boot process of your computer. In addition the system must be rebooted again. Therefore terminate all running applications. This process might take up several minutes. Degger* tested the tool on his Windows XP Professional system and here is the comparison: Original Boot Time: 30 seconds
Optimized Boot Time: 23 seconds Grab your copy now

it gets slower after more use, like if u dont shut down properly.
i know wat u mean though. the loading screen is well quick, like 15secs, but then just before the login screen is takes much longer.

I haven't used this yet, and I don't plan on. I went from a 1.5 to 2 min boot in Win2k to a 20 sec complete boot (from end of BIOS to after login) and I am quite happy!

XP faster to *boot* than ME? I don't think so. Maybe XP is faster than 98SE to boot, and XP *is* faster than ME during runtime. But there's no way XP is faster to boot than ME. Not by default anyway.

My winXP loads up quite a lot of software each time. I have icq, yahoo, MSN, NAV2002, itouch, startNpref, PSstrip, activesync and it used to take 2:25 min to load everything up.
and now only 1min. believe it or not. amazing.!!

I'm with you buddy, I'd like to see something like this that actuly works with Win2k ;-) I would think it wouldn't be all that hard, with WinXP and Win2K being so much alike.

I sure'd like to know what is going on. I measure my XP bootup time in how many times the little blue bar goes across the progress meter on the startup WinXP splash screen.
For me, it varies between 5.9 times and 6.1 times - more if I have a USB device plugged in. Oddly enough, this is my second install of XP, and it boots up much slower than the first time - it only went across 2 times.

My Windows XP use to take 20 seconds to boot and now I timed it at 5 secs. I was amazed that this program could do it without do anything bad.
