This is literally something right out of a Bond movie.
Students at Virginia Tech have created a monstrous jellyfish. That is a robot. That spies. For the US Navy. Its name is Cryo. And it does more than spy.
The hulking 170lb robot conserves massive amounts of energy due to its propelling nature. That means it can stay out to sea much longer (we are talking months) than say a robotic shark could. It comes equipped with lasers, and a ray gun- just kidding. We wish it did. But it is battery-charged, and has a silicon dome. It has been outfitted with sensors and software as navigation, making this expensive toy destined to roam the seas in search for bad guys! (And to monitor the ocean and send back data, and clean up and monitor disasters yada yada yada).
It is still years away from being a sea going jelly, but in time, it will ready to stalk your local coastline.
