Qbert is a remake of the 1982, Gottlieb game, Q-Bert, or Q*bert. Here's a bit of interesting trivia first explaining why we call it a remake of Q-Bert, or Q*bert. Q*bert was Gottlieb's most popular arcade game. Naming Q*bert was a long and ongoing process. It was known loosely as Cubes during development until they decided to name it after the character itself. There were many bad ideas for the name initially included "Snots And Boogers," and a few test machines were developed using the name "@!#?@!" We'd like to have one of those. Someone suggested mixing the test names "Cubes" and "Hubert" and calling the game "Cubert." Art director Richard Tracy changed the name to "Q-bert," and the hyphen was later changed to an asterisk making Q*bert the final name of the game.Looking back, Davis has expressed regret for the asterisk, because the asterisk in Q*bert makes it unusable in crossword puzzles and because the asterisk was commonly used for a wildcard in a search. Hardly anyone uses wildcard searches at the time this was written; instead, one must write a couple of paragraphs using as many keywords as possible and mention Qbert, Q-bert, or Q*bert in the hopes that a quality write-up lets people just like you find it. Of course, being arcade game fans, we just had fun writing about one of our favorite classic games.Qbert comes in two different versions; full screen and normal. We've included both in this download. This remake is not designed to be an exact duplicate, but it's pretty close. One of the highlights of Q*bert was the "swearing" in quotes because the so-called swearing in-game is a cartoon balloon with characters like "@!#?@" that appears when you run into an enemy. The game is fun and requires no installation. All the sounds and colors are a bit different, but again, very close. One example you can see in the screenshots is the distinct, multi-layer colors in the cubes, something we don't recall in the original. There's a high score list included as well.Again, Qbert isn't a perfect remake, but we think you'll enjoy wasting some time playing it as much as we did. It's an excellent game to have in your collection.
