HP USB Disk Storage Format Tool is a free, portable app to format or make your USB drive a startup disk.Be sure to run this app as administrator or access to your drive will be denied. Insert the flash drive you want to format before using it, and HP USB Disk Storage Format Tool will detect your USB drive. In our tests, we used a SanDisk Cruzer 32GB thumb drive. It also detected all of our included card readers, so you'll want to be sure to check the drop-down box to select the proper drive.Once you have the right drive selected, you can go through the options. You can choose the file system and volume label (drive name) first. After that, you have format options including quick format, enable compression, and create a startup disk. To make it a startup disk, you'll need to have system files available somewhere on your computer. You are given a warning before you begin that all the data will be erased and a status of what afterward. Our 32GB test drive took under 10 seconds to format to NTFS, so speed is one of HP USB Disk Storage Format Tool's strong suits.While you can always format your drive from Windows Explorer or File Explorer, HP USB Disk Storage Format Tool adds some options, but it also leaves a few out. For example, HP USB Disk Storage Format Tool cannot format to exFAT or the restore to the default option. It does add the compression and startup disk option. It's up to you if you need these options or something possibly better than Windows default format tool.
