Gone in 60 Seconds: The Impact of the Megaupload Shutdown on Movie Sales

Social Science Research Network looks at the impact of the shutdown of Megaupload.

In a 26 Page PDF that has more math that I'll ever even try to pretend to understand, The Social Science Research Network concluded the shut down of the Megaupload increased both digital sales and digital rental of movies after the shutdown.

Comparing these unit sales increases to the post-shutdown average sales, we find that the shutdown of Megaupload caused a 7-10% increase in digital sales units and a 4-7% increase in digital rental units for the two studios in our sample.

Looking at the total sales reported (http://www.the-numbers.com/market/) that is a fairly impressive 700 million to 1 Billion in digital sales alone. No wonder Kim Dotcom has been in so much hot water.

Then again - That's still a lot less than funding a President. So I guess it all evens out someplace.
