DivX 5.2 Free & Pro

Posted by [NT], 07/15/2004 11:32 PM 6 comment(s)

This is the latest version of the codec DivX 5 ! The best and the most used codec in the world ! You need to install this software if you want to encode a divx5 movie or if you want to see a MPEG 4 movie.

You can now select between two different versions of divx video: divx and divx Pro. divx remains free, as always, and you can download it for no cost below. divx Pro is our professional-level product, but personal users may purchase divx Pro for $19.99. And if you`re willing to watch an occasional pop-up ad while you browse the web, you can download an ad-supported version of divx Pro for no cost at all. We wanted to find a way to make divx Pro available for no cost to all personal users, and this seemed like a good way to do it.

By default, we`re giving you the version with the most features for the lowest cost, which is the ad-supported version. Be sure to change your choice below if you want to download something different.

Oh I wonder if they sped this up over 5.1.1.... It was rediculous how slow they made 5.1.1 over 5.0.5.

If you are talking about encoding performance than you certainly don't know that they changed quality/performance ratio level with the 5.1 release.

5.1 adds a new higher quality encoding process which is significantly slower than the default 5.0 encoder.

If you like to get back the speed and slightly lower quality you have to decrease the 5.1 encoding quality by one step and you'll get what you normally have with 5.0

XVID owns!!!

I use XVID and MPEG2 only(and occasionally WMV,for broad viewing).

Cheers!

1. Not the best, divx5 has fallen behind most others, including xvid and even wmv.
2. You don't need it to play mpeg4 movies. Get ffdshow it plays way more divx/mpg4 files and does it faster...

You know, you guys need to at least check the canned news releases. They removed gain from the 'free' Divx Pro version this time but it expires after six months of use. They probably realized that people were disableing it anyways.

But at least read over the relases before you post.

What do you guys recommend for decoding only, divx's or xvid's codec? (I don't care about encoding with either at all, as I work with mpeg and wmv recordings and editing.)
