Amd athlon 266fsb 1.2ghz, 266mb ddr sdram, gigabyte GA-7DX motherboard.
There also seems to be 'bugs' when looking at the 3dmark benchmark again, but their has always been for me...

The 22.50's somethings funny!!!
Check your Z-buffer
21.85's running 3D Mark 2001 the Z-Buffer=32bit
21.83's running 3D Mark 2001 the Z-Buffer=32bit
21,81's running 3D Mark 2001 the Z-Buffer=24bit
But yet...
22.50's running 3D Mark 2001 the Z-Buffer=24bit
I for one don't think they would take a step backwards.
21.81's were the last ones released by Nvidia with a 24bit Z-Buffer.
The 22's should have 32bit Z-Buffer

Installed these drivers with my Geforce 2 Ti and Q3 has never performed better!
The levels that usually gets choppy due to huge amount of textures (q3dm12 or tourney 4) is smooth now. I used the 21.88 before this driver and I am sticking with the 22.50s for now

Is it that big of a deal? Does the Z buffer really need a transparency channel?

Put on the 22.50's (in WindowsXP with a GeForce 3) and while the scores in 3DMark 2001 were a little higher, it was also performing weird. The images would stutter a little bit throughout all of the tests, so I guess I'm sticking with the 21.83's.

You r completely wrong.
There is no 32bpp z - buffer on any Nvidea card (TNT1/TNT2/Ge1/Ge2/Ge3).
The z-buffer formats supported by those cars r:
D16
D16_Lockable
D24X8 - 24 depth, 8 padding
D24S8 - 24 depth, 8 stencil

***** 3Dmark, its just a pissing contest. Look ma' my piss can reach the ceiling. You dont play 3Dmark. I play Tribes 2 and Opperation Flashpoint, and I test with the demo of Unreal2. All work fine with 21.85 on my leadtek winfast GF3 Ti500. All the other 21.xx or 22.xx drivers so far have too much glitches and z-buffer problems.

I have serious problems with my Asus 7700 PRO GTS and 21.8x drivers. I've also tested asus 21.81++, but the only driver that does not lock up my XP machine is <12.90 .. Using XP 2600
Setup :
Asus P3V4X v/PIII 1GHz, 768 ram
Asus 7700 GTS PRO 64DDR
Intel PRO100+ nic
Creative Live! 1024
Adaptec 2930U2
Plextor
Behaviour : If i right click, drag 'n' drop or double click on an .AVI .MPG movie file on a network drive, the machine reboots. XP reports nVidia being the cause of the problem. Every now and again the machine also reboots when i start/quit a game (excactly when the gfx mode switches)
Right click.. or whatever with AVI files on local drives causes no problems at all.. no problems viewing DivX files..
I would love to use the 21.8x drivers because they give me appx. 10-12fps increase in Q3, and that is of course a good thing
Any ideas? BIOS settings? (Tested disabling fast writes ++ in bios.. no avail..)

The Z-buffer shoud be 24-bit only because other 8 bits are used for stencil buffer.
24+8+32!!
(32+8 is not 32)

5230 with 22.88e
but with these a whopping!!! 5450 well that is performance .

I had the exact same problem, but with a geforce mx. I changed drivers, tried all of them and now with the 21.85 it's never happened. I'm using a powercolor release, but it should work as I don't think these guys do a lot in the way of customizing drivers for their own videocards.
Hope that helps, the other thing I did is reinstall WinXP at the same time, and didn't install the via's 4in1, and that could be it, but it's way more probable that it's just the video card drivers.
Good Luck

With the new 22.50 everything is screwed up (but some really neat looking artifacts), I went back to 21.85 and everthing is perfectly fine!

There seems to be some confusion as to what a Z Buffer is. It stores the depth information of vertices in a 3D scene. A 32 bit Z buffer does not consist of 24 bit Z buffer + 8 bit alpha channel. Only when referring to colour depth would you have an alpha channel. Furthermore, it is possible to have 32 bit colour without an alpha channel it's just that it would be pointless since we cannot distinguish between more than 16.7 million (the number that 24 binary digits can represent) different colors. So graphics chip vendors stopped colour variations at 24 bit and used the next 8 bits to represent transparency. A stencil buffer is most often used to create shadows in 3D games. With a 24 bit Z buffer, vertices can be sorted into any one of 16.7 million positions from the camera to the horizon in the 3D environment. This is quite a lot and more than sufficient for current scenes.

3dmark2k1
1.4ghz AMD
GeForce2
winXP Pro
21.85 =3398
22.50 =4066
No ARtifacts and no problems in UT,Black & White,Half-life,Counter-strike,Tribes2. EXCELLENT DRIVERS..as far as that guy saying about z=buffer, mine shows 32bit with the 22.50, but 24bit with 21.85..weird.

CRAZY performance increase!
Creative annihalator pro (GeForce DDR)
3dMARK 2001 scores
12.90 <-- 2689 (creative 3dblaster driver release)
21.85 <--2569 (creative 3dblaster driver release)
22.50 <--3011
That's alot more points, considering its an aging geforce ddr.
