ATI Technologies on June 23 introduced a new desktop-use Radeon 9100 IGP integrated chipset, supporting Intel?s new 800MHz FSB (front-side bus)-based Pentium 4 processors. Shipments of the chipset are set to start in August.
Formerly code-named RS300, the Radeon 9100 IGP supports dual-channel DDR400 memory in addition to the 800MHz FSB standard. To more significantly expand its presence in the desktop sector, ATI has positioned the Radeon 9100 IGP for the US$500-level value market and has tried to further increase its appeal by strengthening the new chipset?s graphics function, featuring the same RV280 core used in the chip designer?s Radeon 9200 graphics chips. Paired with ATI's self-developed IXP250 south bridge chip, the Radeon 9100 IGP is priced at US$40, slightly lower than US$41 quoted for Intel?s 865G integrated chipset, which also features support for the 800MHz FSB and dual-channel DDR400 standards. But according to motherboard sources, the actual quote for the new chipset could fall as low as US$35. Given its price and specifications, the Radeon 9100 IGP has been adopted by major motherboard makers, such as Asustek Computer, Micro-Star International (MSI) and Gigabyte Technology, ATI said. Encouraged by the positive response, company chairman and CEO Ho Kwok-yuen predicted that ATI will be able to take up 10% of the desktop-use chipset market by the end of 2003. ATI also launched a notebook-use Mobility Radeon 9100 IGP integrated chipset along with the desktop version.
