XP problems - no cd drives & continues reboots

First of all, I just like to say that Warp2Search.net is Great! It's so updated. Seems like there are a ton of people working on it all the time.

Well, here's my problem. My XP program does an automatic update. After the last update, which was last night. I notice I was missing both my CD drives (DVD & CDRW). I try restarting a couple of times, but still missing. I went to look in the hardware devices and there was yellow exclamation marks. It said the drives was missing or corrupt. I deleted the drives and restarted. XP found the drives, but did not install the drivers for them. They still have the yellow exlamation mark. I then rebooted and picked "Start from last good known boot". Now my system does a countinues reboot. It gets to the XP logo and then restarts. Any suggestions? Thanks.

I don't think it's the bios? Can I install the VIA 4in1 Drivers in safe mode?

I had a similar problem and continous rebooting. After trying everything I changed my cpu ( Athlon XP 1800+ ) guess what problem fixed. Not sure if this is your problem, if you have xtra one or can borrow one to try, worth a shot. Smile

Ok, I figured it out. It involves removing 2 Registry Entry.
Got the info from the Microsoft site. Here's what I did. Thanks for everyone's suggestions.

----------

Locate the following registry subkey:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/System/Curretcontrolset/Control/Class/{4d36e965-e325-11ce-bfc1-08002be10318}

1. On the File menu, click Export.

2. In the File name box, type savedkey, and then click Save.

3. Click the REG_MULTI_SZ data type UpperFilters, and then click Delete on the Edit menu. When you are prompted to confirm the deletion, click Yes.
NOTE: If this data type is missing, continue to the next method.

4. Click the REG_MULTI_SZ data type LowerFilters, and then click Delete on the Edit menu. When you are prompted to confirm the deletion, click Yes.

5. Quit the Registry Editor, and then restart the computer.

I have encountered the same problem after upgrading the firmware on optical drives in XP. Here are the things that worked to solve the problem: (1) try booting into Safe mode and rebooting (2) unplug the power cables to the optical drives and see if it boots. If so, power down and reconnect the power to the drives and reboot (3) If it boots and the drives are still not functioning try reinstalling SP1 from the Microsoft site.
The problem that you encountered by allowing Automatic Update is proof that you should do this stuff MANUALLY so you know what's going on with your system and thusly undo botched updates.
