Worth Upgrading?

Hi,

Running an AMD XP1900 on an A7M266 with 512 Megs of Mushkin using Windows 2000 on 2 IBM 6O Gig ATA 100s. My Graphics Card is an NVIdia GeForce 2 Ultra and I still think it flies but I have some spare cash and might buy the new ASUS V8460 Ultra GeForce4 Ti 4600. Would I actually notice that much difference? I do a lot of DV editing and only play relatively old games (Links 2001 etc). Would be grateful for advice.

TIA

Blue

hell yeah

you would notice a huge difference actually, especially on the chance that you decided to use any newer apps/games. of course, perhaps a better alternative would be to buy the geforce4 ti4200, which offers superlative performance at a fraction of the cost.

If your not sure if you would notice a difference why choose a 4600?
Don't waste your money on a 4600 go for either a 4400 or even better a 4200. Save yourself some money. the performance difference between all these cards just isn't worth the expense in my view. and with money saved you could buy some good speakers or game controller or 19' monitor or something. the main difference will be XS Anti-Aliasing which will give you quite a boost in image quality for nearly all your games.
and you will see a performance increase but the increase will be greater if you run at 1280 or higher resoluions in your games.

choose the 4200

I would say WAIT for awhile ! If you're satisfied with your current performance ,that's more than enough !! Some exciting new cards are on the horizon which would be worth checkin out !! Apart from Nvidia and Ati cards....Matrox and Sis are also releasing some mind blowing cards.More competition means better products in the future ! Also the newer cards will have future enhancements like DX9 compatibility and AGP 8x support.
So wait for a few weeks ,and get a card that will give you a tremendous boost in performance ...and one that won't need upgrading for a long time. That's what im gonna do. Gonna stick with my faithful ol GF2 gts card for NOW.
