Have you checked that DMA (Direct Memory Access) is enabled for the CD drive under Device Manager. If not all the data will be going through the processor thus slowing your system down

had once the same problem with lg 52 and could only fix it by using w2k, later i changed my cdrom (lg 52X) with a new dvdrom and problem solved. i tried same cdrom with xp in a second pc but there was no problem. i think it was a problem with combo k7s5a + lg cdrom but i am not sure

the Abit KX7-333 is known to have such issue with south bridge. the only way to solve it is to update the mainboard BIOS http://fae.abit.com.tw/eng/download/bios/kx7.htm

if your system freezes momentarily on inserting the CD, its coz ur CD drive is heavy on CPU usage.
LG, AOpen drives fall in this category ( but consequently provide better error correction then most)
Creative hardly puts any load on the CPU ( just like the rest of their products) but provides less err correction
ASUS works like creative but still avoids CPU cycles
Acer does neither

However if u face mouse lag problems while reading data from ur drive,
u certainly have a problem. Try to install logitech mouseware. Maybe that'll help.
