Win XP says my AGP card is in PCI slot...?

Under device manager my display card is showing PCI slot in properties list. Also, under system devices, On PCI to AGP the properties lists PCI mode as well. So far Ive tried flahing BIOS, Reloading drivers...23.11, 28.32. Ive tried removing the devices and restarting windows to have it reload them....no luck. In BIOS i have the start up mode as AGP and it is set for AGP x4. I dont seem to have a aperture size setting. My system is as follows;

ASUS A7Pro MB flashed to ver 10.11
256 Ram
800 Duran
Hercules GeForce 2 MX (w/ a GF3 128m ti200 arriving tomorrow)
SB Live
HP Burner
Maxtor 40 gig HD
NetGear 100mps card (Cable Modem)
56k HDI Modem(as backup)
Det drivers now at 28.32
Windows XP Pro

Various software loaded and using;
PC Cillin
McAvee FireWall

Any suggestions?

I had the same problem with Asus AV133M boards, that would work in AGP in win98 and Win2000, but would refuse to use AGP in XP... I've stopped using Asus boards in any system I supply since and no longer have that problem...

Have you tried loading the latest Via 4in1's? You might want to try downloading the seperate via agp driver and forcing an intall by using "update driver" in the system manager. All the drivers are at http://www.viaarena.com
Good luck. Smile

force AGP driver install

How to force the VIA AGP driver to install under Windows XP

-> System Proerties
-> Device Manager
-> System devices
then select "PCI stadard PCI-to-PCI bridge"
update drivers
the Hardware Update Wizard will open.
select "Install from a list or specific location", click Next.
select "Don't search. I will choose the driver to install.", click Next.
click "Have Disk.."

Enter in the path to the files:
VIAAGP1.INF
VIAAGP1.SYS
They can be found in any of the VIA AGP driver zip files or in the VIA 4in1 driver files. They will appear in a subfolder called \winxp

click OK.
There now should be a list with the Model "VIA CPU to AGP Controller" click on it and then click Next, click Close, Windows will ask you if you want to restart, click Yes.

Now your AGP should be working!
Test it by using a program like WCPUID-Chipset Info...- AGP Information
Also in Device Manager "PCI stadard PCI-to-PCI bridge" should now be replaced with "VIA CPU to AGP Controller".

Always been told this one thing

Never install a pci card underneath the AGP slot. Some mobos can cause IRQ errors. May be the issue your having.

What does it matter?

Not sure then...

Did what you suggested. Under device manager/system/ There is a VIA CPU to AGP controller. When I right click on it and check properties It still shows as being in PCI slot 0. Is the AGP slot refered to as a PCI slot 0 in windows XP? Is this a matter of computer versus video card or computer versus MB?

To what does it matter;
It makes a hugh amount of difference between a PCI video card and a AGP video card. And if windows thinks its a PCI card then thats how it treats it. No AGP x4, not as much resources being provided. Probably BUS bandwidth is cut down as well. Not sure on that, as I'm only a couch tech.

i have had no luck activating AGP in XP Home. I can't even force an IRQ setting for the AGP slot via the BIOS, there's no option in the BIOS for that! I have gone through all the available 4in1 updates for my board, updated to every version of the nvidia drivers, and tweaked all of the settings I could find in the BIOS. (i eventually settled for the native WinXP 4in1 drivers.)

My device manager still thinks the Ti4600 i have is in PCI Slot 1, while under system properties the VIA CPU to AGP Controller is listed as PCI Slot 0. Thankfully this manages to work for me and my system is stable, and AGP seems to work for me. (i got a 3dbenchmark 2001SE score of 10239) and when I run UT at 1024x768 i can get around 110FPS solid.

For what it's worth, i solved a lot of problems (keyboard/mouse freeze, nv4_dsp error, BSOD) by disabling ACPI in a windows reinstall.

I think Chicken has the right idea though in stating "I've stopped using Asus boards in any system I supply since and no longer have that problem... "

Either that or stop trying to configue XP Home to do anything involving 3d graphics... :roll:

ASUS A7V333, KT333 BIOS 1011
AMD Athlon XP 2000+ 1.6ghz
Corsair 512mb RAM
Chaintech Geforce 4 Ti4600 (30.82 Dets) AGP Slot
SB Audigy Platinum PCI Slot 4
Intel Pro/100 S NIC PCI Slot 3
Antec 352X 350w PSU
