How about Sygate Personal /Pro/...I've been using this for several months and I didn't have a single crash!!!
The same cannot be said for Zone Alarm...

Have to agree that Sygate works great. Many friends have had problems with ZoneAlarm and XP although I never did when I tested it, myself. When it comes down to it I pick Sygate.

Yes I can.
Norton Personal Firewall, automatic Preferences for Windows Messenger work fine.

Same version on Windows XP Pro with Microsoft Messenger ver 4.6 build 4.6.0076.

Try running the setup wizard again to pick up you apps and see if that helps.

Regards

I have tried them all and Norton IP works the best! Zone Alarm works ok, but shuts the system off out of the blue and restarts without warning. Even the latest version has the same problem. Black Ice also causes shudden shutdown and I have used the XP version of that one, as well. I am a paid and registered user of all firewalls mentioned here and find I would NOT switch from Norton. It gives you Norton AV 2002 and controls the others do not and is VERY easy to setup and live with.

In the notification area on the task bar, right click the NIS icon and choose options and then click on view event log...

Now click on the log menu and clear all tabs.

Now leave it open and try testing your microsoft messenger (do what you think NIS wont let you do).

Now check the logs for restricted entrys, and that should give you a better idea of what is going on, if you dont get any then it is something to do with your connection, not NIS..

If you are still having problems then send me an email (in my profile) and we can take this off of this board...

I use a free program called Agnitum Outpost. It is very configurable, including many preset rules and the ability to create new rules. It has worked very well for me and done well on security tests. It has a built in adblocker as well. It allows very specific configurations, for example, you can allow a program to access only a specific port, using a specific protocol, in a specific direction to a specific place. Thus, I can allow software to access the internet to download updates from its authors website, but prevent it from sending any info out or contacting another site. You guys ought to give it a try.

Firewall and XP

Big Grin Got to use Zonealarm Pro, it works very well indeed. Also Quick Heal X-gen or Protector Plus 2000/NT/XP are both very good anti virus programs for XP Pro/Home.
