Unknown CPU usage in winXP??

Hey guys I've been having some really strange CPU usage readings off XP the last few days. I had to reinstall windows and ever since I keep on getting a high amount of cpu usage, around bout jump up to 3& when idle and sometimes up to 12& when i'm doing somthing.

Has anyone got any ideas as to what the problem could be? oh and I have installed SP1.

1- check cpu for overheating,
2- have u installed any tweakware, customizer.. tweak xp...; if so then uninstall them.
3- if u have been using the same HDD for long time without defragging please defrag it.
4- check for bad hardware component, like sound card, Lan-card, Internal modem, tv-tuner card etc. Remove all these components restart your PC and try installing them one by one.
5- if possible try installing other OS and check whether same problem arises.

IF u try all known options and havent found the solution then try changing the hdd itself. get/borrow from somebody and install the OS and hunt for the problem.

I hope there is a solution for u in the above options i have put up.

can u put complete specs of ur rig.

have you checked the "processes" tab and seen if any runninng process is using the cpu?

By default XP has a few things like tune-up, defrag and indexing scheduled to run occasionally and these could be causing it too

If you download DivX movies from the net, you need to deactivate a file-info "feature" in windows xp. You do this by deleting a registry key.

Delete unfinished avifiles Unfinished download of avi files (divx) can be a trouble in xp. there is a fix to let xp behave much better so it\'s possible to move or delete large avi files. The obnoxious bug in XP that causes Explorer to read the entire contents of broken AVI files before allowing any access to them is caused by bad behavior of shmedia.dll. To correct this misbehavior in Windows XP, remove the following registry key. HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Classes\CLSID\{87D62D94-71B3-4b9a-9489-5FE6850DC73E}\InProcServer32 This will prevent Explorer from loading shmedia.dll in response to file property queries on these files. It works great. Yours P

====================================================================

The obnoxious bug in XP that causes Explorer to read the entire
contents of
broken AVI files before allowing any access to them is caused by bad
behavior of shmedia.dll.
This problem manifests itself by causing Explorer to read the entire
contents
of an AVI file, regarless of its size or location any time the mouse
pointer
is hovered over it, or an attempt is made to access it in windows
explorer.

This causes 'permission denied' errors when trying to simply move,
copy or
delete these files as they cannot be changed while Explorer has an
open handle
on them.

This also causes a DoS situation where large AVI's are stored on
remote shares and Explorer keeps reading the files from beginning to
end each time they are accessed.

To correct this misbehavior in Windows XP, remove the following
registry key.

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Classes\CLSID\{87D62D94-71B3-4b9a-9489-5FE6850DC73E}\InProcServer32

This will prevent Explorer from loading shmedia.dll in response to
file property queries on these files.

This will not effect your ability to play files, get file attributes,
or even view thumbnails.

Say goodbye to all explorer.exe 100% CPU issues.

hey guys I sorted my problem.

I bought a new 48x Lite-on writer last week. Because of the amount of hardware I have I had to rearrange my HD's etc partly onto my IDE raid (not using raid) so thats why I formatted (plus my old writer was SCSI so I wanted a clean install without old Advansys drivers all over the place).

When I booted my PC earlier I noticed that it was taking a long time to boot so I tried defragging my hd (which I normally do anyway) but for some reason it kept on crashing windows. Next thing I had a blue screen of death and upon reboot the liteon was no longer being detected by my IDE controller.
Once I took the drive out my PC was back to usual my CPU usage was bearly hitting 1% doing most things.

Anyone else had a problem with a liteon writer???
if so reply as I'm interested to know if this is a common problem or if it's just a f**ked writer.
