My 120GB Maxtor 6Y120P0 hard drive is getting noisier by the day; it's never been quiet at all, but I'm sure it never used to be as bad as it is. There doesn't seem to be much reason for it either - I've checked out the drive using diagnostic tools and it seems to be functioning at peak performance. Weird.
I'm big into having a noiseless PC and my Maxtor is messing things right up. So what's the quietest 120GB hard drive that I can replace it with? Anyone else found the Maxtor noisy?

what kind of noise?
a high pitched whine could be one of the heads cratching against the plates.

Go for : Seagate ST3160023A 160gb 8mb Cache Barracuda 7200.7 Plus
I couldn't recommend this drive more. It is soooo quiet.
I've had IBM Deathstars before, and when they inevitably died I replaced them with these. I have a 160GB and 200GB model. They are v fast, run cool and above all quiet. Also have a v good warranty.

Samsung drives are extremely quiet but you lose performance compared to the newer stuff now. I use 3 Western Digital drives, pretty quiet but I can hear them.

It's a low, rumbling sound when data is read from the disk...
