Warp2Search Forums: Which one buy? GF4 or Radeon 8500 - Warp2Search Forums

I am planning to buy a complete new system but I don´t know which card I should take.
The brand new GeForce 4 TI 4600 when it comes up or the ATI Radeon 8500.

What do you think? What are ur pros and cons?

I cant vote for ATI since me and 2 of my friends got the 8500 and we get texture errors and poor DVD quality and some other sick stuff...
its pretty fast but far not as fast as the gf4 ti4600. get a gf4ti4600 and youll be happy. Ill throw my r8500 out and get a gf4ti4600 too.

These cards are not in the same league.

A Radeon 8500 is comparable to a GF3 so a GF4 (non MX) is much faster.

The real question is how much money do you want to spend? Best Buys and CompUSA are offering a $50 rebate on the 8500 for a final price of $139 or so.

I bought it and for the bucks its a good deal. Works great so far.

yeah, u might want to think about the ti4400, little cheaper and u can always overclock it fairly easy im sure.

if the cost dont matter get the geforce 4
if it does the 8500 is a good deal.

I am a R8500 user and for me it has worked great. It does give you Mpeg decoding where as the GF4 does not meaning that if you want to watch DVDs, you have to buy a separate decoder card along with your GF4. ATI's drivers are maturing very well also so that has become a lesser of a factor. If you watch DVDs, I'd recommend ATI. Also, ATI generally produces a better quality images and the price for the features is very good. Overall, the way the hardware and software are these days, some people have no problems where as other seem to be plagued by them with virtually identical setups. It really comes down to you trying out the card and seeing if it works for you. If you get a retial card at Best Buy and you don't like it, you can always bring it back. Good luck.

GF4ti4400 and 4600 have DVD capabilities and both are miles ahead of the 8500 there is no comparison to be made here

now ATI 8500 and the GF3ti500 is a fair comparison....

I'm not even gonna get into the high res capabilities of the GF4

look if your spending any kinda money on a graphics card then DO SOME RESEARCH dont listen to some idiot who has had one experience with his card and no proper knowledge of what the hell he's talkin about.... CHECK FOR YOURSELF....

Yes, I apologize. I did make the mistake of DVD decoding with the GF. I guess the new card does support it. Yes, the high resolution is great but you also have to remember that the GF4 is much more expensive. Why get a Chevy when you can have a Ferrari? Same kind of argument. Frame rates are important but you're really limited to refresh rates of your monitor and depending what resolution you're using, it can go from 60Hz and higher. It all depends how much money you want to blow on the card. And don't call me an idiot. You look like a jack ass posting something like that. I'd say you taking this personally. I made an honest mistake with the DVD thing. Oh, by the way, the quality of the latest GF cards has declined considerably and thinking that switching from ATI to NVidia or vice versa solves problems magicly is foolish. GF users take swings at ATI and same goes for ATI going against NVidia. Make your choice. I'd say that either way, you'll get a good piece of hardware and with everything that is new, problems will occur. Be prepared for that.

Oh, one more thing. The distance between GF4 and 8500 is not that great. IF you know any kind of low level hardware design, a lot can be said for an extra pipeline, increasing the depth of it and better implementation of micro code for the instructions with improved commmand overlapping. Slap a couple of new registers and you got yourself a serious increase in performance along with higher clock speed since you have more room now within the rising and falling edge of the clock. And yes, I am sure ATI is already testing their new chip as well. And calm down man, we're not solving world crisis here. I am just trying to give some advice and if I make a mistake, poeple like you should correct me but with less aggresion. Life goes on.

Just my personal opinion from someone who had the option the play some weeks with both the Radeon 8500 and a GeForce4 4400.....

You want quite a bit of bang for the bucks, a card that meets every demand and yet receive great quality..... Get the Radeon 8500 !

You have too much cash on your hand, and want something more original than flushing it down the drain, yet buy nothing new, just some more unneeded FPS ? Then get the GeForce4 !

yep very true. up 80 FPS more than the R8500 WITH AA ON isnt that much :wink:

get the gf4. the radeon 8500s tend to have many graphical glitches. mine still does it when its clocked to 200/200 but its rock stable up to 305/305... well, with about 10% errors on the screen lol

The Radeon 8500 is the best bang for the buck (or dollar to frame). I've been running the 8500 for 2 months now with no trouble what so ever. I have been playing Nascar Season 2002 (a real resource hog) at 1600x1200 32bit with no hicups at all. Not to mention my 6700 3dMark score. My real world experience with the Radeon allows me to recomend this card to anyone.

Well my ASUS (1st generation) GF3+AMD 1.4@1.6 171fsb scores 9350 3dmark2001se points so 67xx is no great achievment,

As for the 'Aggressive post I posted b4 sorry if I jumped but I assumed since you 'didnt notice' the DVD capabilities, you didnt know what you were talking about....fair enough you made a mistake...I'll try to withhold on the snappy remaks in the future..

Plain and simple the GF4 will enable you to run just about any game that will be thrown at you at probably the highest res+refresh your monitor can handle with 2xAA or some serious Anisotropy settings...

If you got the cash get one...

I would wait 2 months until the next matrox card comes out and then you actually might want that card becuase it will be faster than GF4.

I've owned 3 ATI cards now. Recently, I purchased the 8500... lemon. Went back to replace it and the drivers were shoddy. ATI makes great hardware, but their drivers are complete garbage (guess what I voted on the poll :grin:). I'll never buy another ATI product for that simple reason. At least you can find drivers for nVidia products that will perform well for you.
