Ti4200 64mb better than 128mb?

Hey. Bought my Vid card (on my signature) about 2-3 months back now but back then when I was going to buy it a friend of mine who knows alot about comps showed me this benchmark, which showed that the 64MB DDR version of the Ti4200 had better Frame Rate score than the 128MB and the 128 8xAGP was only better by like a frame :o . Source: http://www17.tomshardware.com/graphic/20...ts-02.html .
He said that the memory on the GFX card doesnt work like the memory on the comp so more isnt necessarily better... . Since then I still aint convinced but im just wondering what you guys think.
Soz for the wrong read LOL .

Chaos Smile

well

your friends right for the most part, but for the few dollars extra for 64 more megs of ram, that'd be worth it in the future (hell maybe even now).

i got the 64meg version of a 4200, i'm now considering getting the 128.. like i shoulda done to begin with.

This data from the same review:
GeForce4 Ti4200 64MB NVIDIA Reference v41.09 250/514 128Bit DDR
GeForce4 Ti4200 128MB NVIDIA Reference v41.09 250/444 128Bit DDR
GeForce4 Ti4200-8x 128MB NVIDIA Reference v41.09 250/514 128Bit DDR

As you can see, the memory clock for the 4200 128MB version is clocked significantly lower than the 64MB model (444MHz v 514MHz). The GPU core clock is the same for all three models (250MHz). Also note that the AGPx8 model is basically a mesh of the two AGPx4 models; 128MB RAM at 514Mhz with the addition of AGPx8. If you look at the scores you will see that the AGPx4 64MB model and the AGPx8 128MB models score approximately the same. This should tell you that the AGPx4 128MB model is memory bandwidth limited and that there is no significant AGP bottleneck. AGPx8 is a marketing number only for this model.

Hmmm. I just can't get around my head on why something with lower Memory than the other can be better  . I just find it un-commonsense.

Just overclock the 128mb's memory to the same (or very close) to the 64mb's and they will bench exactly the same scores (the 128 may possibly beat the 64).

You will definately see the 128 beating the 64 in later games, as textures get larger and larger, once the 64mb's is full it has to resort to using system ram, and speeds will drop off compared to a 128mb using it's onboard memory.

I have the Albatron TI4200 P Turbo which comes with 128mb of BGA (3.3ns) mem clocked at 550MHZ.

When clocked at default 64mb ti4200 speeds it performs the same as the 64. It is due, as people have mentioned,to the reason that the mem on normal 128mb cards is clocked way lower than normal 64mb cards.

For the record the mem on this card runs stable at 700 MHZ Smile pity my comp is too slow to take advantage of it Wink

128MB graphic card is better than GeForce 4 Ti 64MB. Which graphic card are you going to buy in 128MB. Now I have GeForce 4 Ti 4800. If you want you can buy GeForce 4 Ti 4800 or if you wait until June 2003 you can get GeForce FX 5900 Ultra.

The 128MB AGP4x version had clock down the mem because it used the same small PCB with less layers designed to run with 64MB - the extra 64MB uses more power than the PCB was designed for so they clocked it down in case of stability

The 128MB AGP8x versions use a different PCB with more layers to provide additional Power for more RAM so the RAM is at full speed there
