Today I post this message because I have a doubt that keeps me from sleeping. If someone can answer please do it. What's the range of normal temperature of the MB and of the CPU? I ask this because I believe my computer is overheated. The temperature the ASUS PROBE tells me are MB temp.: around 40ºC/102ºF and CPU temp.: around 67ºC/152ºF

That CPU temp is horribly high.. my CPU runs at 42 C and its overclocked.
Something bad.

Athlon XP 2000+ OC'd 1.8GHZ

That does seem a bit high, it's summer here in Australia (around 30'C+ room temp) and my athlon1800 is only 52'C. I need to fix a worn out case fan and the temp will probably go lower.

Check and make sure that there's nothing blocking the cpu fan, ide cables are usually the worst, and if not try installing a case fan or two if your case will let you. Although the temp is high, it's still within AMD's maximum rated temp of ~85'c or so for athlons. I'm not sure of thier recommended temperature though.

Hay, m4st3rd0n, how do u overclock your Computer? I have Athlon XP 2000+ too.

It's not easy but you gotta unlock the multipliers (hardest part) then you just up your FSB and lower your multiplier a lil so it doesnt get too hot depending on how high you wanna make your FSB.

My FSB is (166x2) 333 FSB...
and the CPU multiplier is 11...
166.65 x 11.0 = 1.833ghz

My temps are:

MB - 29-34c
CPU: 31-36c

However, my Abit mobo also gives me a CPU die temp reading which is in the range of 52-58c. My other CPU temp (above) is surface temp taken from the underside of the CPU, but i dont know where Asus mobos temp readings are taken from.

on O/C i have my XP2000 running at 1805 Ghz, its not unlocked but was acheived by upping my FSB to 145 x 2 = 290 FSB and upping the CPU voltage to 2.80. This O/C only raises my temp by about 2c and produceses no stability problems.

A freind of mine has a AMD Tbird 1.4 ghz and he had similar temps as you are reporting. two things solved his problem. first while he had two 80mm fans one in front and one in the rear both were blowing air out. this created a dead zone in the middle of the case so I got him to switch the front fan to draw air in. he also ditched the stock cooler and got a volcano heatsink. ( even if you dont get a volcano get a heatsink that has a copper core) those two changes dropped his temps down to 84F for the case and 112F for the CPU. previously he had been running 105F in the case and 157F for the CPU.

one other thing that I do is cut out the metal grill at the rear of the case it only impedes the airflow of the rear fan.

Anyway... I have a Athlon XP 1800+ O/Ced to 2000+

CPU Temp = 40c / 104f

System Temp = 32c / 89f

Sergio. the heatsink iss is talking about is a very good heatsink fan combo & I actually have 1 for each of my computers... Here is a link to the heatsink fan combo I use for both my comps...

Btw.. The temps I gave are from my gaming rig.. My other comp I use as a server with a old Athlon 1333 O/Ced to 1440.. It runs hotter but I believe it has a bigger die size than the XP CPU's..

For the system temp I leave the door off & have a small floor fan blowing into it when the comp is running...

I get such a low CPU temp cuz I totally covered the XP chip with heatsink compound.. LOL!!!! Top & edges as well as the Thermaltake heatsink fan combo just rox! I dropped like 5 point though from covering the entire chip (top & edges) with the heatsink compund....

You don't have to unlock the multipliers to O/C as long as you have a motherboard that allows you to up the FSB... I went from 133 FSB stock on a 1800+ to 145 FSB to get to 2000+.... Your only going to be able to O/C as far as either your CPU, Mobo. or Ram will allow.. In my case I think I am being limited by my Ram. My Ram is PC 2100 = 266. A FSB of 133 x's 2 = 266.. I have my FSB O/Ced to 145 which = 290.. I have plenty of temp room on the CPU so my guess is the Ram is the limiting factor in my O/C.. Hope that helps...

Thank you all, I'll open the case and check out. The problem must be that the fans are not blowing the air out. But what calls my attention is that I have 3 fans and that the computer makes a lot of noise. Maybe the fans aren't working well. I appreciate your help since I am new in fixing the comp. (I just tried to play and never open the case).

Just make sure that the fan(s) in front of the case are drawing air IN and the rear fans are blowing air OUT. this gives you the airflow that you need.
also stay away from cheap generic case fans not only are they noisey they dont move much air.

I prefer antec or panaflo's. Antecs are reasonably priced and do a decent job of moving air. a good rule of thumb in judging airflow efficiency is that there will not be a big diff in temp when you run the machine with the side panel off. if you get a big difference in temps when you take the side panel off your airflow is bad.

Ive heard that the asus probe often reads some cpu's as 10C higher than rated heat

Yeah those temperatures are a bit too high for a 1GHz Athlon...
However, the accuracy of the Asus IProbe software is somewhat questionable.

For a reasonably accurate reading, try Motherboard Monitor 5.
It works pretty much fine on my systems.

You could also check the temperature readings in the BIOS to see whether the Asus software is telling the truth or not...
If it is the same, try...

Applying AS3 (or any thermal goop) on your CPUs core.
Oiling your fan.
Reseating your HSF.

My temps r about :-

Cpu 51degs C idle; 56degs C Load.
Mobo 31 degs Idle; 34degs Load

and thats with an Alphapal 8045 Hsf and Delta Fan.. tho the Delta is only running at 7v but is switchable to run full belt if need be
