system crash

hi there

For the last 6 months i have been having problems with more and more games frezzing after a couple of minutes and somtimes acompanied by a permanent beep tone.
I am using the old bx motherboard with a p3 850 clocked at 950 so the fsb is running at 112. My graphics card is a gf3 ti200 slightly oc´d but that doesn´t seem to make a difference either way
The only way i can prevent the system from crashing is by lowering the fsb back to 100.
I am hoping there is some way of tweaking the system so i can get the sfb back at 112. There used to be issues with overclocking the agp and having side band addressing enabled but as with all other nvidia cards mine is disabled.

what Manufacture is your BX board made ? I am asking this 'cause unlike now (where any damn taiwan company actually does manufactures good quality board), not all board makers used to churn out good overclocking boards back then.

i remember the good years  , i had with asus BX board which was a scorcher for couple of years ...

Seems to me that either

a) The FSB is too high. Try maybes 110 and lower.. if however u can only set it to 100 without it crashing then u maybes have a pci card that doesnt like to be pushed out of spec.

b) memory cant run at the higher bus speed if its only pc100 sdram.. increasing voltages will help but will cause heat problems.

c) GFX card is designed to run at 4x agp. BX is limited to 2x i think, try running it at 1x agp and see if that makes a difference.

Sounds like the comp is hard locking from what u describe. Whats ur temps like ?

Id suggest u strip it all down. Leave only the GFX card, 1 stick of ram prefereable pc133 stuff and obviously the cpu and try that..

I had a BX board when i had my 500 celeron and i was only able to use a 110 bus stable (Cel300A@500).. but im sure other warp2 members will have info

you are simply especting too much from ur old system ... look

the steps are 100 133 166 200 and so on ....

lets take the PCI .... it is 33 MHz on a 200 MHZ system it is 1:6

this means raising 200 to 212 raises PCI to ~35MHZ
now look at your system .... there it is 1:3
100 to 112 means ~37,5 PCI
same with all other divsors this is really heavy overclocking especially for old components ... u simply have to go lower
