My favorite vertical scrolling games are Raptor - Call of the Shadows (Old Apogee dos game, still runs if you use vdmsound in winxp) and Tyrian 2000.

Being able to earn money based on kills/bonuses through levels and buying better guns and shields ect. between missions always seemed better to me for pc scrollers than picking up guns during levels, like arcade games.

i know raptor ... yes nice game ... I have just the same opiniont like you .... you really should try "Outbreak" this has the best weapon upgrade ever really worth the DL only one bad thing ... weapon level "only" up to 16 which is not enough in my eyes

I've been collecting MAME Roms which includes a heap of vertical scrollers, but most arcade ones are too hard / designed to get max cash out of players.
